One thing I've noticed when in some serious traffic jams, is that 18-wheelers will move into the break down lane to stop cars from using that lane to cut ahead.

Question is, are they "supposed" to do that or are they just trying to keep others from cutting the line? Reason I ask is they seem to be the only ones who will do it and while they may be justified in doing so...I've seen some real close calls when the cars try to sneak through.

Just curious.

it actually helps keep traffic going, since everyone is in a hurry when they try to get to the bottle neck using all the lanes it makes it worse, ive been known to do this in my jeep, it really does help

Supertrucker, your shoulder IS the breakdown lane. Same thing, different name.

Truck drivers are some of the most courteous people on the road. They have to be, it's thier living. The blocking the breakdown lane is just forcing other drivers to follow the rules. In most places, travel in the breakdown lane is prohibited by law. Many people want to just get where they're going and don't give a rat's tail about the law. Truck drivers need to get where they are going too, and will help to keep traffic moving so they can.

I vote for the 18 wheelers.
There are usually signs 2 miles before a closed lane. instead of every one merging . they race to the closed lane and cause big traffic jam trying to get over.

Answer: No, they're not supposed to do this.

In general people shouldn't use the breakdown lanes or shoulders for driving. There's all kinds of debris over there which can damage the tires. Plus emergency vehicles need to use the lane to get to accidents. If someone ahead is injured, having to wait for the idiot to move over can shave precious seconds from the life saving arrival of the ambulance.

You can't always see what's ahead so you don't know why there's a jam.

I can see exceptions though. If you can see your exit up ahead, I don't have a problem with someone cutting over and getting off the freeway.

It's a ticketable offense though.

I personally like when they do this. Nothing pisses me off more then jerks trying to pass on the shoulder. Heck, I don't drive an 18 Wheeler & I will move over to block the idiots.
