I'm aiming this question at Chrisitians.
How many of you can explain the trinity? I mean explain it in a way that makes sense? Do you fully understand the trinity? CAN it be explained? I'm not trying to offend. I've just always found the concept baffling & wondered if ANYBODY understands it. Or it is one of those: "you just have to have faith" things?

LP....How can we believe that all of the previous Prophets (Noah, Abraham, Moses, Solomon, David etc.) ordered their followers to believe in one God, Alone, without partners ( the Lord your God is a Jealous God) - no mention of the requirement to believe in the Son and the Holy Ghost - and then Jesus supposedly came along and - according to Christians - declared himself to be the Son of God? Now according to the Christian credo, anyone who does not believe in the trinity is condemned to Hell. So what of the Old Testament Prophets and their followers, who knew nothing of this trinity? Are they going to be in Hell? How can we believe this? If we believe so, we must also believe that Paul of Tarsus is with them in Hell, because he did not mention a trinity, he confined himself to the Father and the Son. The Holy Ghost was added much later.

The concept was stolen from the ancient belief in Mind, Body & Spirit.

I'll sound rather stupid, but I can't explain the trinity, to others. I have my personal thoughts, as uneducated as I am in religious stuff.
I also think of course of the famous explanation from St. Patrick, the clover leaf.
I will ask you check these web sites as what ever I say will only confuse, not help you.
I will say that as a father and son team most humans can understand this, say as a business. The spirit of the Father is also sent to do things as the father is busy doing something else.
Also being human there is NO WAY I understand GOD, or anything much actually - even other humans are beyond me.

cici,just for your information the Holy Spirit was not added much later and eventhough you do not believe in the Trinity that does not mean you are going to Hell.By condemning someone to Hell we are playing God.Just as Justin Martyr in AD 151 said "Therefore,those who lived according to reason and were thought to be atheists were really Christians".Justin Martyr was one of the Chruch Fathers.You will also find the Spirit in the Old Testament as well as the New Testament.The Trinity always existed as one from the begining of time.To make it simple of understanding the concept of the Trinity,think of a family.A family has many,many different people but in the end of the day their all ONE family.Is God not greater and bigger than one family.In this way the Divine Beings in the Trinity are different but ONE.Just like how i'm different from my sister but were are still part of ONE family.If you need a more understandable example or explanation,please e-mail me at blastoramaboy@hotmail.com.I would also like to add,Muslims,like you,believe that God is One,The Almighty.Christians also believe that.But God is not only Almighty(The Father).God is with us in our sorrow and suffering(Jesus,the Son) and God is within us(The Holy Spirit).In this way God comes to us through the Father,Son and Holy Spirit,who are One but different.

The trinity is the three offices of God. God is the Godhead. Jesus is God in the flesh, on this earth. And the Holy Spirit of God is just that, the Spirit of God. Where ever God is at there is the Spirit.

The concept of The Trinity could be explained but only to a certain extent we do not understand how God is in three persons but is still one... muslims can say the same thing as to how their god has been existing forever some things we cannot know about God anyways the athanasian creed explains it in a way...:
Whoever wants to be saved should above all cling to the catholic faith.
Whoever does not guard it whole and inviolable will doubtless perish eternally.
Now this is the catholic faith: We worship one God in trinity and the Trinity in unity, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the divine being.
For the Father is one person, the Son is another, and the Spirit is still another.
But the deity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, equal in glory, coeternal in majesty.
What the Father is, the Son is, and so is the Holy Spirit.
Uncreated is the Father; uncreated is the Son; uncreated is the Spirit.
The Father is infinite; the Son is infinite; the Holy Spirit is infinite.
Eternal is the Father; eternal is the Son; eternal is the Spirit:
And yet there are not three eternal beings, but one who is eternal;
as there are not three uncreated and unlimited beings, but one who is uncreated and unlimited.
Almighty is the Father; almighty is the Son; almighty is the Spirit:
And yet there are not three almighty beings, but one who is almighty.
Thus the Father is God; the Son is God; the Holy Spirit is God:
And yet there are not three gods, but one God.
Thus the Father is Lord; the Son is Lord; the Holy Spirit is Lord:
And yet there are not three lords, but one Lord.
As Christian truth compels us to acknowledge each distinct person as God and Lord, so catholic religion forbids us to say that there are three gods or lords.
The Father was neither made nor created nor begotten;
the Son was neither made nor created, but was alone begotten of the Father;
the Spirit was neither made nor created, but is proceeding from the Father and the Son.
Thus there is one Father, not three fathers; one Son, not three sons; one Holy Spirit, not three spirits.
And in this Trinity, no one is before or after, greater or less than the other;
but all three persons are in themselves, coeternal and coequal; and so we must worship the Trinity in unity and the one God in three persons.
Whoever wants to be saved should think thus about the Trinity.
It is necessary for eternal salvation that one also faithfully believe that our Lord Jesus Christ became flesh.
For this is the true faith that we believe and confess: That our Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son, is both God and man.
He is God, begotten before all worlds from the being of the Father, and he is man, born in the world from the being of his mother --
existing fully as God, and fully as man with a rational soul and a human body;
equal to the Father in divinity, subordinate to the Father in humanity.
Although he is God and man, he is not divided, but is one Christ.
He is united because God has taken humanity into himself; he does not transform deity into humanity.
He is completely one in the unity of his person, without confusing his natures.
For as the rational soul and body are one person, so the one Christ is God and man.
He suffered death for our salvation.
He descended into hell and rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
At his coming all people shall rise bodily to give an account of their own deeds.
Those who have done good will enter eternal life,
those who have done evil will enter eternal fire.
This is the catholic faith.
One cannot be saved without believing this firmly and faithfully.

Example: 50 states make up one United States......so, supernaturally, 3 make one God. It's certainly possible even though there are skeptics, if you look at it this way. Others have adequately explained the differences in this post. Good luck in your search.
Also, just about anything that is one is comprised of multiple parts. You think your car could run with just the engine? It DOES make sense if you think about it logically.

Each of the persons of the Godhead is distinct, yet they are all each, by nature, God.
With time, for example, the past is distinct from the present, which is distinct from the future. Each is simultaneous. Yet, they are not three 'times,' but one. That is, they all share the same nature: time
