Religious affiliation can be a positive when it provides a social support network for people that goes beyond immediate family. This can be good if the group is truly caring of the other members and if their support is based on love rather than on judgement and criticism of others.
Religion can also be positive if it creates a framework for behaviour that is beneficial to the fabric of society. But this framework must be broad, flexible and inclusive in order to accommodate the diversity of the human experience.

No, faith has stunted clinical progression and promoted violence for the era of historic past all contained in the call of sturdy. seem on the murders that befell in the course of the Spanish Inquisition. throughout that element, all excitement became ripped out of people's lives. They were afraid to have something the church said as a self-love, mutually with a hairbrush. Painters ought to not longer paint attractive paintings. Botticelli painted remarkable and attractive paintings until eventually the Spanish Inquisition got here into being. What do you imagine turned right into a first reason for the darkish a at the same time as and why did they call it that? Take a lok on the Jacobite turning out to be. take a seem on the mistreatment of ladies people contained in the call of Islam. scuffling with over religious ideology. I believe there is good and bad in everything. I think that religion is very helpful in getting kids to think about the mysteries of our existence and of the Universe - and when you have them in an organized religion that meets weekly, you can feel certain that when the child starts asking questions and really wanting to know about who we are and what we are doing on this planet, that they will get answers that you, as a parent, will be satisfied with. You can feel good that you have provided a place for your kids to meet and form relationship with others of similar values. You have a framework and a community to help you teach your child the values that are important to you.
I, personally, think a good religion takes you from your first questions down a path that leads to self discovery and the realization of you true place in the grand scheme of things - a beloved and divine child of the Universe.
Peace!

Social acceptance and support. Also, charity, promotion (in most cases) of societal values, education, enlightenment. Very hard to group all religions together. But these are only a few I could think of the pertain to most religions,

It is personally beneficial to believe in someting greater than yourself. Also many religious groups have given million of dollars and time and energy and councilling and providing shelters for single mothers and orphans. One doesn't have to be religious to do this but it one thing that many religious groups do alot of and is beneficial for all society. And contrary to popular opinion most wars are not caused by relgion but by people trying to steal other peoples land and property then trying to sell their war by dragging God into the equasion. Just added this tidbit in response to John G's comment.

I think the best benefit that can be derived from religion is hope.
Life can be pretty grim and sometimes religion can carry us through.
Also, a lot of religions encourage adherents to be kind to each other, also a nice benefit.

Throught history, including the biblical days, most wars were started because of religion, and in the name of religion.

I'm religious, but I wouldn't be religious just for the "positive effects" (though there are. for example, increased life span.)
