I do believe in an afterlife, but assuming heaven did not exist, then, yes I believe humans would create a belief in one for comfort and expectation of a new life to come. I could even go as far as to say the mind is a powerful thing, powerful enough to even create supposed proof of afterlife by communicating with departed souls. But, if the mind is that powerful, enough to falsely prove life exists after this one, isn't that power enough to say something bigger is going on here. It points to the path the soul does live on, in my opinion.

OK I am going to answer this from a historical point of view.
Almost all cultures have done what you have written above.
But the fact is that what ever they couldn't explain logically they would assign a god to it. Eventually some people couldn't handle the fact that there were 1000's of gods. This too happened in different cultures, not just one. So the KING or CHIEF or whatever, would pick one and say you must worship this god and only this god. As time went on there was one of these so chosen one gods that became more popular than others and then other cultures were introduced to this one god...some were forced into believing only in this one...and then all others were deemed as myth, even though all gods were thought up the same way! so then now we have the Christianity view on religion.
But the Buddhist and Muslims and so on view Christianity as a myth as well. So therefore I tend to believe that all their beliefs are based on a mixture of mythology and maybe a small bit of facts.
I hope this came close to answering the question...(again they created gods for what they couldnt logically explain)

It is inconceivable to me that life has a duration. It must be infinite because its a non local phenomenon. Thus our ideas of a life that begins and ends are an illusion of the dualistic consciousness.
But the simple answer to your question is yes, people come up with a lot of crap because they are frightened.

Not all mankind believe in one, but those that do... must. If it were possible to disprove all religion, religious groups would simply destroy the possibility, as they have for centuries.
