The sheer fact that they exist and that millions of people for hundreds and thousands of years have based and conducted their lives around them give them great significance as a motivation of human behavior. Whether or not you believe in a particular religion will depend largely upon your experiences in the world and your disposition towards other people.
Basically, religion is a statement of personal belief. When I say that I am a christian. I am saying that I believe in what I understand the teachings to mean, and not what anyone else thinks that they mean. Although, it is highly unlikely that with the millions of others who share this belief that I wouldn't find others of like mind. It is naturally that way in the psyche of man.
Consider the popular religion of modern politics. Basically, a revival of leader worship, but if you will endulge me that the leader of the political parties are the priests, the past leaders are saints, the ancient writers like profits, no mistake their god is money, they even print it on their currency (why does everyone assume the God mentioned on anything in the US is the God of the Bible) , the minions of party members congregation, they argue over various things to believe about people in their own parties, the code of conduct political correctness. They sacrifice truth for pleasure and comfort to appease the masses to keep them under subjection with the fear of losing their rights and liberties. Need I say more.
Anyway, believe what you want. Make it logical, Logos, the word that makes sense. The fact that christianity is built around the concepts of sacrifice, love, and personal responsibility is what I find appealing. Good luck.

i became born into Protestantism yet good around the age of 14-15 I grew dissatisfied with it because it wasn't giving my the closeness with God that I longed for and appeared to worth "version" to the renowned international over obeying the note of God. So I researched almost each and every faith there is. The extra I studied, researched, examine, and prayed the further I understood that Orthodox Christianity were my real religious homestead all alongside. i have self belief that some way of reality exists in all faiths, some more advantageous than others and at the same time as i have self belief that mine is the total one and that this is the route my soul is meant to take i'm the awesome individual who will disrespect others for searching themselves in simple terms as at homestead on a distinct route.

In my religion I can live the way I want to but have I to follow one code. In my religion we have more tolerance of others. You should really look for a religion that is right for you and only you.

My religion is special because it's what feels right to me. You should pick a religion that you truly believe in and that feels right, not something that other people say is right. Not all religions are truly the same, they have their differences, but they all depend on faith.

Religions are progressive. They "complement" each other, they do not "compete" with one another.
Just like going to school and then to the university.
What you learn at school does not contradict what you learn at the university. And in the university they don't tell you that what you learned in school was worthless.
You just have to find the latest religion whose teachings have to be in harmony with science and reason. With no prejudices towards other religions, races, nations, gender, etc... Where men and women are considered equal. Where unity is fundamental and the goal of mankind.

Religion is only special because the people that follow it say so.

I believe in God, but don't belong to any sect. I have found most religions only want to control the lives (physical and spiritual) of their group.

I do not believe in the word 'religion' I accept Christ as my Savior, he is my way to God the Father, his Holy Spirit guides me, to shine brightly in the Light of GOD. All 'religions' are not the same. Most are hypocritical teachings from the mouth of man construing God's actual Word. I read my Bible, and search for God's true Word there, and his Holy Spirit helps me disern what is right. It is not my job to judge where you will spend eternity. However all who mock and blasphemy God, I'm sure will get there ticket to eternal damnation. It is not my word, but the word of God, whom I live by and serve.
