As I understand it, they mutate and become resistant to the drugs developed to destroy/manage them, bad hygiene and hospitals acting as storehouses for germs because everyone brings their illnesses to that same venue must all contribute to the development of 'superbugs'.

Many people get antibiotics for a common cold. Colds are caused by viruses and are not treatable with antibiotics of any kind. There are also many people who do not finish their antibiotics when they have a bacterial infection and the bacteria can become immune to the antibiotics and mutate into something stronger.

Washing hands thoroughly helps. Also not prescribing antibiotics for every sniffle case.

Its because when we use chemicals to kill bugs, some of the bugs are stronger and survive it, and they are the ones that breed, and then more chemicals are used and only the strongest of the next generation survive, and they breed, and it's all evolution - kind of hard to explain I'm afraid.
