Is it a real tree or an artificial one? If it is real, there is not much you can do! However, if it is not, try spraying it with the "animal off" products they have out there. I have used them in the past to keep the cat off the couch and it worked, so it might work on a tree.
Since most cats and dogs don't like bitter apples you might want to try plugging in apple scented "plug-ins" in the area where you are having the tree.

We used a squirt gun with water in it when our cat was acting up. He would run the other way after awhile when he saw that gun come out. You could use a spray bottle too. I have a co-worker that said she used a spray bottle of water and vinegar and it worked to keep her cat away from her Christmas tree. She said her cat hated the vinegar and it didn't harm the cat. I think water would do the same.

Like "starting over" we have been known to anchor our artificial tree to the ceiling using a screw-in hook (like you hang plants from) and then either fishing line or yarn.
I also tie the ornaments to the branches using short pieces of ribbon (not those metal hangers - can't imagine what it would do for a cat to eat one of those).
Otherwise, we just know that our cats are going to be fascinated by the tree and we deal with it. It's their house too! :)

Last year we started putting our tree upstairs in our loft. This allowed us to put a baby gate at the top of the stairs to keep the cats out. Worked like a charm!
Good luck!

After my son out grew his playpen, I used to put the tree in there.
Before that, I used to use fishing line and anchor it to the walls and ceiling.
Good Luck. Careful of the glass ornaments, my cats used to knock them off the trees and all over the house. They usually broke when they hit the fireplace.

my cat never gets into our Christmas tree. he just loves to lay under the tree and sleeps there all day lol. but, he does ,love to get into the presents when we put them under the tree. but we just spray him with water and usually he stops it....ohh make sure you tape on your bows to the presents, because our cat (don't know about others) loves the bows and tears them off. good luck!! and Merry Christmas!

Use the squirt bottle/gun method. When my cats are misbehaving, all I have to do is shake the bottle and run the opposite direction. and as long as you're not squirting near an open electrical outlet or open wires, you should be fine.

I've got a very curious kitten, and the water doesnt seem to help all the time...I want to try to avoid moth balls (smelly). Since we're not home all the time, any other suggestions?
