Contrary to another post on here you can have a great, bright, shade of red without bleaching it first. Reds do pose their own issues but NOT due to the fact that they're "an unnatural color" it's due to molecular size and instability....but that is far more information than I need to get into here. What I would recommend to you is that you go to a professional. Seek out someone who specializes in hair color and be prepared to pay for the service.

Since (most shades of red) are not a natural shade of hair color, the red pigments do not hold onto your hair as well as other colors would.

Therefore, the red is not going to look "red" for long. Especially since your hair is darker.

Bleaching it makes it harder yet for your hair to hold any other colors, so that is probably not going to work either. Sorry :(

I have dark hair, and I have colored my hair red dozens of times.

Recently, I have tried some of the John Freida Color Glaze that you put in your hair after you shampoo, then rinse it out.

It does help the color show a lot more, but it is rather expensive (sometimes over $8 a bottle), and you almost have to use it every time you shampoo to see results.

My advice: Learn to love your dark brown hair. Mine has been about every color possible, and I finally returned to my natural color, and I like it a lot. :)

The problem with red hair color is that the color fades. That said, I think you need to change the products that you are using. The good news is that you do not need to bleach. For coloring your hair, look into brands like Loreal and Garnier Nutrisse. For shampoo and conditioner, look into Biolage or Matrix products.

the summer before i dyed my hair red i went to the beach with sun-in in my hair. regardless of how much you lighten your hair first, the red won't hold on too long. and bleaches and other things ruin your hair. i dont recommend it. its taken a year of not dying my hair for it to start looking half-normal again. :-( good luck!

Red hair isn't for everyone, so don't force the issue or you'll end up bald. Just leave it alone and be yourself.
