You cannot earn your way into Heaven or Hell; it's all based on faith, or a lack of it.

Fine, here is a real answer:
purgatory is only accepted by Catholicism for the following reason. (for the record born and raised catholic, and catholic schooling including university)
purgatory is not actually in the bible. it isn't against anything. another example is Mary's perpetual virginity. the bible doesn't actually say Mary was always a virgin throughout her whole life, catholics just believe it as part of church tradition.
Protestants are usually very literal, they don't believe it unless it is actually written.
the reasoning behind the catholic belief in purgatory is the following (i'm just ripping off Thomas Aquinas, feel free to reference his works, but they are sometimes difficult to navigate)
people sin,
sin goes against god,
the soul or spirit needs to be cleansed of the stain of sin before it is worthy to be in the presence of god.
catholics believe that even though you are forgiven your sins through the sacrament of reconciliation (confession) one must still atone through prayer (penance) and eventually make a pit stop in purgatory before proceeding to heaven.

The Bible teaches that it is given man once to die and then the judgment. Purgatory says you have another chance through the prayers of others.

If purgatory is having another chance at heaven after judgement I do not believe that God teaches us that. He teaches we have to believe In His Only Begotten Son to anjoy the gift of salvation. The works of faith is in our daily lives showing others the way the truth and the light.

If Protestants hadn't thrown out 7 books of Scripture they would have known about Purgatory, but anything that contests their view is automatically eliminated.

Purgatory was adopted by the catholic church which was taken from the part of the bible that is called Abraham;s bosom.
Luke 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Those who died beford Jesus was crucified for our sins, who lived according to God's laws, still await the return of Jesus at the rapture. Those who died before the crucifixion of Jesus and did not live by God's laws, went stratght to hell. In the above scritpture.... the rich guy is in hell, and can see Lazarus in Abraham;s bosom.
Those who wait in the bosom of Abraham still today, shall be those who are called the dead in Christ, that will rise first when Jesus returns for His church.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
There are many false teachings that are being taught today that twist the word of God and mislead good God fearing people away from His truth. Those who accept Jesus as their savior go straight to heaven. Jesus says so.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
On the cross,Jesus took one of the thieves with Him into heaven to His Father because that thief told Jesus that he did not deserve to be punnished and he himself did.

the bible does not teach any doctrine about purgatory.
man only have 2 destiny:
eternal life or eternal damnation.
there is no neutral point such as purgatory.
when a child dies at his innocent age, he/she is sure to go to heaven.
when an adult who already knows what is right or wrong dies, he/she is anwereable for whatever he/she has done while he/she is still living here on earth.
