For all-around use get the 28-300. Normal lenses are 50mm so you will use somewhere around there a lot.

I have the Canon 70-300. It's always been great...good clear images all the way to the edge. I got it second hand...it is also image stabiliser which really slows it down and I tend not to use that feature. The sigma is great value. I've always had Canon cameras and lens and I wouldn't change. The quality is great.

To get a fair comparison you need to try lenses of a similar focal length, the Sigma will obviously out perform the Canon for wide-angle, but the Canon will probably be faster, it all depends on what you want to photograph.
Canon lenses take some beating!.

For an all-round lens it must be the Sigma, which covers wide-angle to telephoto. It makes a great travel lens.
