What does it mean to "define yourself"?

If you had to write a paper on "How should one define oneself in society which does not consider him or her equal" what would your thesis be? I really have no idea how to approach this.

Imagine yourself living in a community or society where you are not a member of the major group. Possibly you speak a different language and very few people in the community speak your language. How would you feel and how would that affect your life and your outlook?

If you research the term "culture shock" it may give you some ideas for your essay.

We live in a world where men and women are created equal but not treated equally. For example, woman, though with more rights now than before, are still looked down upon as though men are superior to them. If you are a man, do you feel you are superior to women? If you are a woman, why do men think they are above you and how to you feel?

i think it means, how would you say you place in society, like if there wasnt you, how the community be different, what makes you different from, idunno, ur best friend? thnk about it.
