I've not had short hair in a while, but when I did, I found that Fructis products worked pretty well for my hair type. They know do a "Hard Style" range as well.
Products of their's include:
Fructis Style Ultra Strong Hold Spiking Gel
Fructis Style Hard Hair Spray
Fructis Style Hard Mousse

You can do what punks used to do... Guiness, or egg whites. DOn;t do it in summer, the flies will love you.
Or, you can back comb the hair (not good for the hair) with wax, and then hair dry and spray it if you want soft spikes.
Hard spikes, you need to use a gel. Usually (and oddly) the cheapest nastiest gel works the best for hard spikes.... The stuff you buy at a chemists is great!

Use Garnier Fructis Fiber Gum Putty. Go to: http://www.garnierfructisusa.com/ and then click style videos at the top of the page. Then you see different hair style videos on the right. Click on the Faux Hawk and it will show you how to do that hairsytle.
