I'm only 16 years old and I have to wear loads of foundation and concealor under my eyes. However much makeup I use, it looks cakey and they still look slightly dark. I get enough sleep, is there any other suggestions other than sleeping more that will get rid of them? My skin is really pale, which probably makes them even darker. None of my friends have this problem. I can't even stay out long as I know that the makeup will have all came off within a few hours so I have to go home and re-apply it..

It seems like there are as many answers to this question as there are people who have this problem. Here are some that I found from around the internet. Hopefully one of them will do the trick for you. Good luck!

"I've had the same problem as you for as long as I can remember. I eat right, exercise, get enough sleep ....and I still had them. What I just discovered is MAC concealer. It comes in a little container that looks like an eyeshadow. I swear to you I almost cried when the girl let me look into the mirror after applying it on. Try it!!! It is amazing!!!!!!"

"I remember one time a doctor called them "allergy shiners." Apparently allergies can cause undereye circles. Also, dehydration and lack of essential fatty acids (from fish and flax) can worsen it. You could try drinking more water, and taking a flax seed oil supplement. There are eye creams and gels that claim to reduce the appearance of undereye darkness. Supposedly it's the active copper in the product, or the vitamins. If you don't already take a multivitamin, you might consider starting. A cool compress in the morning might help, too."

"Ooh, fishtoss, now that you mention essential fatty acids, i should mention that i also have been eating TONS of flaxseed oil (I get it in my Silk Enhanced soymilk) and salmon. I noticed my facial skin was looking smoother and healthier, but sounds like it could also be contributing to my reduced undereye circles...yay good fat!"

"Eye help my friend!
Hi, this is Leslie Blodgett CEO of Bare Escentuals.
Your dark circles are a common problem for many.........there is help.
There are so many factors that contribute to why any individual has this problem,
so I will just address how you can begin to correct it.
An immediate solution to conceal the dark circles is to use our Bisque concealer. This bestselling Bisque conceals like magic.
It is 100% pure and will not cause irritation to the eye area. Seamless coverage!
Then, I need to emphasize the importance of using a great eyecream.
Our MD Formulations Moisture Defense Antioxidant Eye Cream hydrates and moisturizes the eye area, and also brightens the eye area.
These two products used on a daily basis will not only instantly improve the darkness around your eyes, but actually work to correct it.
Looking forward to seeing your bright eyes!
Yours truly,
Leslie"

"Use a proper concealer. Test out the best colors at a department store counter or at Sephora. (Tip: Tell the makeup artist you are looking to correct the undereye circles and are testing several different types before purchase). Choose concealer that's a shade lighter than your foundation. And if your circles are very dark, go 2 shades lighter. You might be choosing a concealer that's too light if you are getting a 'raccoon look.'

Great concealers include:
Revlon New Complexion Concealer
Estee Lauder Smoothing Skin Concealer
Cover Girl Smoothers Concealer
Neutrogena Smoothing Skin Stick

We find it works best to apply stick concealers with your finger dabbing a few dots under your eyes."

"Invest in a vitamin K-based eye product Eye creams such as Vita-K Solution gel or Peter Thomas Roth Power K Eye Rescue can help strengthen capillary walls so dark circles and veins become less visible."

"Laser treatment If you have a chronic case of undereye circles, you should contact a doctor about lasers. Lasers can thicken the skin by increasing collagen production, so you are less likely to see veins, according to Los Angeles facialist Kate Somerville in June 2005 issue of InStyle magazine."

"Get more sleep. It's the most straightforward step you can take to beat your dark circles. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep a night. Tip: Sleep with your head elevated on a pillow to reduce any puffiness around the eyes."

"Add some exercise. Some experts believe that poor circulation is to blame for dark circles, as the blood "pools" under eyes, and shows through the skin as a shadowed area. To help move this pooled blood along and to improve circulation in general, get some aerobic activity every day."

"Try an antihistamine. While not a guaranteed fix, an antihistamine to help beat allergy-related dark circles can't hurt!"

"Go for a special undereye cream. If your circles are caused by pigmentation (from too much sun or too much rubbing), try a lightening eye cream with an ingredient like hydroquinone. These creams will help fix the pigmentation issue that underlies your circles."

"Moisturize. The eye area needs daily moisturization, especially if you have dark circles. That's because dry skin looks dull, which will exacerbate the look of your circles. Use a cream specially formulated for the eye area."

"Rely on concealer. If all else fails and you're genetically doomed to a life of dark circles, take heart in concealer! Look for one with a creamy consistency in a shade that's one step lighter than your skin. Apply with a concealer brush, pat in to blend, and top with powder for staying power."

I have the kind of dark circles you talk about and have tried everything under the sun. Whatever you do, do not buy the new product on the market "HYLEXIN" which is an absolute rip off. It did nothing for me despite the major hype created. I've even consulted plastic sugeons to see if laser treatment can be done to mask the pigmentation. These type of dark circles cannot be cured. Settle down to the fact that no available product in the market despite how powerful their claim is, will help. The most you can do is use a good concealer.

Okay, you need to be patient with this but it works like nothing else in the long term. You need a cream (or gel is even better, I use one called "Vita-K Solution") with a high concentration of Vitamin K and this should be the very first thing you put under your eye after cleansing. Do this every morning as well as every night before you go to bed. This will correct any abnormalities you have with the capillary structure, which is the most common reason for both dark undereye circles and spider veins later on in life.

As well, the obvious of course. Be sure you're getting LOTS of rest and keep as stress-free as possible.

Some women have dark circles if they lose a lot of blood during their menses. That along with a fibroid cyst, can cause a lot of blood loss and very dark circles. I found that after having surgery to relieve the excess bleeding, my circles are just about gone. I had the surgeries two years ago.
