Allegedly the word "tip" comes from the phrase "too insure promptness." The story, whether true or not, was that waiters used to carry small boxes, with this lettered on them, and customers would place coins in the box. The amount of the coins was proportionate to the quality of service which would be given. Today tipping is usually from ten to twenty percent of the bill. Generally it averages about fifteen percent. In speaking with waiters or waitresses, which are oft times called servers, they say that men are better tippers then women, as women will tip to the exact penny, where men tip generally to the higher rounded off amount.
