Wow, a lot of wrong, some half right answers up there. I wish a doctor had answered you, but I'll take a crack at it. A stroke, also called a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is an umbrella term for several types of problems that cause lack of blood flow to or within the brain. The general types are ischemic, in which blood flow is blocked and hemorrhagic, in which there is bleeding into the brain. There are subtypes within each of these broad categories. The effects of the stroke then depends on where and how severe the damage was to the affected parts of the brain. Often you will not see the permanent results for some time after the stroke. At first they can seem better or worse than they will actually end up. For example, if bleeding continues, a patient will worsen. On the other hand, some brain cells that temporarily lacked oxygen may regain function and the patient will improve. As for the cause, there are many. The different types of strokes have different causes. Hemorrhagic strokes may be the result of a burst aneurysm, head trauma, or many other causes. Ischemic strokes may be related to high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, coronary disease, etc. I hope this helps, but it only touches the surface. Check out an online encyclopedia for more.

A stroke is where a small blood vessel in the brain breaks. It burts in half. Strokes are caused by mostly stress, but also high blood pressure and the deterioration of blood vessel walls as we age.

A stroke is basically a burst blood vessel draining into your brain...and there are varying degrees of how serious they are. The most common cause is untreated high-blood pressure, hypertension, and blood-vessels clogged by plaque build-up.
Get regular check-ups to avoid them...my mom had a very massive stroke back in 2000 and died 2 days later after falling into a coma....unchecked hyper-tension was the reason.
PLEASE...get check-ups...don't be afraid of what you don't know.

A stroke is when a blood vessel in your brain pops (usually after swelling). I don't think they really understand what causes them, I think they just happen. Sometimes it can paralyze you or just one side of your body.

There are two types of stokes, the most common is a clot, the second type it a bleed - this is more likely if you are young. Both cause paralysis usually down one side although other effects can include loss speech or sight.
