I would definitely recommend training him sitting down. They make special potty seats for boys that have a little guard in the front to keep their you-know-what in the potty. I work at a preschool and there have been numerous boys whose parents tell us we need to hold it for them so that it stays in the potty, but this new potty seat with the guard does all that for you!
Plus, I think it is easier to train them sitting down so they get less confused when it is time to train them to poop in the potty. If they learn to stand when they pee, it will confuse them to have to suddenly sit on the potty to poop. I think it would be much easier on him if he was trained to sit so that way he wouldn't suddenly have to change and get confused.
Also, if he learns to stand and you are in public, he won't be able to reach the potty when standing and it will just make things more difficult for everyone.
Good luck!

I am potty training my 21 month old at this moment & I let my son stand up on my feet or a small step while I hold his arms & body, this way he sees that he is pottying in the big potty like a big boy. He has adapted very well!! He even get's excited when we go, he pushes & pushes as he looks to see if he's actually doing it. It's a back breaker at 1st, then he learned to pull up his shirt (so he could see ) & he even wipes & flushes now. Good Luck!!

Always start sitting period. It covers both and thats really all they need to know. Most kids wont use a urnal at all and there's really nothing wrong with not standing to pee with boys but it is somthing they need to know and u can't wait to long to teach it.Get all the basics down with sitting, then after a few months of success introduce the standing... And it usually works If they see by example, so they see o thats the 'big kid' thing and they want to try. And its usually better for dad or a male family member to teach it. So they understand the diffrence and privacy of boys and girls at a young age.

Most people do train their boys by having them sit down to use the bathroom, but interestingly enough my mother-in-law started babysitting one of my wife's cousins a lot because his mother didn't really want a lot to do with him. When it came time to potty train him, his mother didn't care so it was left up to my mother-in-law to potty train him. He wasn't at all interested in trying to learn and was perfectly content to let people change his diapers. She decided to just take the diaper off and let him go around the house completely naked (you can just imagine the mess). Anyway, after a couple times he had the revelation that his diaper just didn't mysteriously become wet and that he was the one wetting his diaper. He wouldn't use the potty chair, but everytime he had to use the bathroom he would go stand in the front door and use the bathroom out the door. My mother-in-law started letting him wear training panties and as long as he could stand at the door and use the bathroom, he wouldn't use it in his panties. Eventually he learned to use potty chair and then the commode.
