Indoor plumbing was the norm for upperclass people in Rome, Italy about 300 BC. Clay, then Lead pipes were used. The toxic lead is believed to be responsible for the insanity of the later emperors including Caligula, and Nero. The Coloseum also had plumbed public restrooms.
