Right on private.
I tried talking to people on an islamic forum at the time they were bitching about the pope. Sorry to say that despie trying to get into discussion to understand their point of view it became clear that they are bent on having everyone become muslim. They were shocked when I pointed this out to them. They don't have a live and let live attitude as regards religion which is clearly the opposite of modern day christianity.
As far as building bridges between the religions I think rather than expect the pope to do it we should expect the politicians. After there's no point in the pope sorting things out if the politicians are just going to mess it all up again.

It is the duty of the Pope to lead the Catholic church and instruct the Catholic people as to the revealed truth of the Gospels as handed down by the Apostles, but also to serve in the capacity to be a bridge to all peoples.

The Pope is going to Turkey to talk to Catholics, not to build bridges to Turkey or to Muslims. He just got through burning any such bridges down in September.

It is the duty of every Christian to build bridges between Christians and non-Christians.
"It is my ardent hope that Muslim and Christian religious leaders and teachers will present our two great religious communities as communities in respectful dialog, never more as communities in conflict."
-- Pope John Paul II, Meeting with Muslim Leaders in Omayyad Great Mosque, Damascus, May 6, 2001.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day."
With love in Christ.

Absolutely not.
Islam is a fantasy created by tribal elders to control a backward ppl.
Also , the nature of islam is to convert the entire globe to its cause by whatever meqans possible.
The last thing we should be doingis lending support to the enemy.
Every time the west takes a step back in appeasement of islam they step forward to fill the void.
Let the pope do his work and the loony left do the bridge building!
order No 227.....google it!

Yes, and it's difficult dealing with a religion that is not centralized. The Pope wants to see an end to the violence and is using his influence as best he can for the common good.
Some people attack the Pope for what he is, and not for what he does or what he teaches. They are blind.

Does the pope have any duties? as the head of the catholic church, to show an example to set the agenda and the direction that he wants to steer the church in as any head of a company does, but he does not have to appease anyone

No, unless the Muslims would want to be taught. However for them we are the infidels and need to be eradicated, I am talking here about the fanatical misguided ones. However, why does the Muslim community not condem those fanatics?!
