Upscale would be an exclusive restaurant, with a well-known chef and an expensive menu.

Upscale would also have to have a beautiful decor, impeccable table settings and more mature and knowledgeable servers.

When they rate restaurants by stars, they look at everything. The size of the kitchen, the size of the bar, the amount of space each guest will have, the menu, the wine list, etc. To receive a 5 star rating is very hard. There are probably only a few in your city. The price point will probably be fixed. Like a 5 course meal would be 120 per person not including wine. The last time we went to a 5 star we spent over 600 before tip and that was 2 of us.

well your in new york but over in england we have michellin stars and AA rosette and R>A>C ribbons. also there a number of other awards with various guides and regional and national awards. it is all to do with the service, cleanliness of the the premises front and back of house. knowledge of the staff( including the chefs, bar staff, managers, wine waiters etc...). the atmosphere. the quality of the products, usage of local produce, flavours and correct seasoning of food and that the dish is well balanced and cooked properly. also that all things are polished, placed in the correct place etc.. that staff are there when needed. the reason for high prices in very highly rated establishments is that the staff work long hours to have everything as close to perfection as possible, for example the food left after lunch is discarded and everything will be re-done for evening service, so it is at the highest quality possible, some of the higher end restaurants which are still cooking everything from fresh from raw ingredients so everything is cooked after your order is taken. it is also about helping and educating people about enchancing the eating experience, e.g. the best wine or even real ale etc to compelement your choisen dish. but at the end of the day a good restaurant is some where that you feel happy and relax and not out of place. quick note:- some great chef in britian are walking away from the award stucture in this country and going back to more humble surroundings.

All the servers will be dressed impeccably, you probably need a reservation to get in, the decor will be exquisite, the tablescape will include a full place setting on linens, you'll probably get a sommelier, and menu will be incredible, and the prices sky high!

you mean like 4 stars or 5 forks? micheline guide?
i guess you have to know A LOT LOT LOT of wines,food and even be cultured to really know.but if you don't know all of these,that is why there are restaurant guides!

when the hotel is nice looking with the waiter wearing nice clothes and by the name they have give to the hotel .........but mostly by the price of the food and drink they sell and the guards they keep to secure the hotel
