This is overkill, but this is an excellent answer to your question....

Define "Church" by: James Eaves

Thesis: to define the term "church" using "God’s Dictionary".

Text:

Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Introduction:

A) The term "church" is many times misused.

1) Many speak as if it is the building in which we worship God.

a) 1 Timothy 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

b) So you see the church is the house of God.

2) But what is the church? (ecclesia – the called out)

a) Ephesians 1:22-23 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

b) 1 Corinthians 12:12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

c) The church of Christ is made up of baptized believers.

B) For a more detailed definition of the term "church" we will now turn to "God’s Dictionary".

1) Once again we will notice that each passage sets forth a meaning of the term.

2) Hopefully with a better understanding of the term we will have a greater appreciation for the church.

Discussion:

I) Built By Christ – Matt 16:18

A) He said He would build His church. – name

B) He said He would give Peter the keys to the kingdom.

1) Matthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

2) Important to remember this point later on.

C) Illustrate

1) "I am going to build a school"

2) "I am going to give you the entrance applications"

3) What happens when people fill out those apps?

D) Do you belong to the Church that Christ built?

II) Bought By Christ – Acts 20:28

A) Purchased by His own blood.

1) He had to die in order for our sins to be removed – Heb 9:22

2) John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

3) His blood washes away the sins of those inside that church.

B) Illustrate

1) In the OT people who accidentally killed another person could flee to one of the 7 refuge cities where they could await a trial and not be killed by that families avenger of blood.

2) God gave them these refuge cities.

3) But if they wanted to reap the benefits of these cities they first had to enter into them.

C) Do you belong to the Blood Bought Church?

III) Begun On Pentecost – Acts 2; 2:47

A) Daniel prophesied of the church –Dan 2:44

1) As did Joel 2:28-ff

2) Acts 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

B) Christ gave Peter the keys to the kingdom – matt 16:19

1) Notice who is preaching to the people.

2) Acts 2:14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

3) Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

4) Now notice the entrance of people into the church/kingdom

a) Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

b) Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

5) Peter opened the door with the key/Gospel.

C) Do you belong to the Church that Began on Pentecost?

IV) Blessed For Eternity – Eph 1:3; John 14:1-3

A) All spiritual Blessings are in Christ.

1) Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

2) In his body.

3) Which is the church – eph 1:22-23

4) We just noticed the entrance into the church in Acts 2, but it can also been seen in Paul’s words to the Galatians.

5) Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

B) If we remain in the church of Christ (Christ’s church/body) we will reap the benefits for eternity.

1) John 14:1-3 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

2) 2 Timothy 4:6-8 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

C) Do you belong to the Church that is Blessed for Eternity?

Conclusion:

A) Many denominations call themselves "the church"

1) But how many of them where Build by Christ?

2) Bought with His blood?

3) Begun on Pentecost?

4) Blessed for eternity?

B) Ephesians 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

1) And there is only one entrance into that body.

2) Will you enter today?

A Church is more than just a building. Jesus was referring to His faithful followers and building upon that foundation.

Yes, He really wanted to buid a church here. The church is not a building. The church is a community. I believe that Jesus came here to teach us how to have a personal relationship with God. I believe that we are here to learn one another.
