I was studying Islam because I think that it is a fascinating religion and that I agree with all of its principles more than any other religion. I was discussing it with another student and he called the religion ‘drug induced’. I was somewhat offended by this and he went on to explain this idea. He said that Muhammad was hearing the voice in a cave; a moist dark cave where fungi and mushrooms could grow and that he had probably ingested one of them and had a trip, causing him to hear the voice he heard. Is there any possible validity to this? I’m sorry if this offends anyone, I would just like opinions.

He is right and wrong about something here. He is COMPLETELY wrong about Mohammad (SAW) being ingested by a mushroom and taking a "trip." He is just making up a wacky theory and I personally think he is the one whos high. But there is a mountain, and it is called Mount Hira. He didn't live there though. He used to go there to reflect because it was a place where he found peace and solitude. He did hear voices in the cave and those were the divine voices of Angel Jibra'el (or Gabriel.) This cave was where Angel Jibra'el had revealed the Holy Quran to the Prophet Muhommad (SAW) in the month of Ramadan (or month of fasting.)

I hope that answeres your question.

I think that anyone researching any subject should refer to authentic sources. No matter what people say, the prophet muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as a blessing to all humanity. You just have to look at the stats alone. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. People will always like to put down
something that is different than their beliefs.
They should look into the concept of tolerance and how the prophet muhammad (pbuh) taught muslims to respect other people. Look at the prophet's last sermon. You will realize it.

please reference the following sources for authentic information.

No, there is no validity to this. The prophet (PBUH) didn't always receive revelation in the cave anyway. The first time he was in the cave, yes, but not all subsequent revelations came to him there. Oh, & those who doubt the Qur'an claim it was written by Muhammad, but it is well known that he was illiterate, like the vast majority of people of Arabia at that time. What we do know about him is that he was known for his honesty and good conduct, to the extent that he was nicknamed 'Al-Amin' - the trustworthy, and called upon to arbitrate in the bitter disputes between the Arabs. A person does not spend the first forty years of his life gaining a reputation as an honest man, then suddenly begin to perpetrate the biggest lie in the history of mankind. We know that he kept away from idolatry, adultery and all the other evils of his time, and chose to worship only the God of Abraham, his forefather. Besides, how does an illiterate man compose what is acknowledged as the most beautiful work ever produced in the Arabic language ? Actually it goes further - the Qur'an challenges anyone to produce a chapter like it. The Arabs were excellent poets and knew how to use their language well, but none were able to match the depth, power and beauty of the Qur'an. This is not a subjective evaluation. Arabic is divided into 16 forms (called "bihar") - one for speech, one for poetry, and so on. The Qur'an fit into none of these forms. In other words, it was a completely new pattern, it defied linguistic classification, and at the same time moved men to tears, and sometimes to embrace Islam, merely upon hearing it's sublime words. This is just one aspect of the miracle of the Qur'an. It also contains explicit, precise prophecies which have come to pass, and information about scientific and natural phenomena, such as the development of the human embryo, which have only recently come to be known in the light of modern instrumentation and techniques.

this sounds stupid. Unless he lived in that cave for months or years eating the walls and writing the Koran.
And why should you worry about offending anyone. Life isn't supposed to be a walk thru the park where nothing we don't like ever happens. I someone don't like it TOUGH

No.
There is no possibility of there being enough humidity in the cave in the desert to produce mushrooms
The Prophet Peace Be Upon Him carried his own water when he walked up to the cave because of the lack of water in the cave.

i'm no longer as mushy as i'd choose to be! i do no longer techniques mushy human beings in any respect. i think of touching one yet another is amazingly substantial and in recent times human beings have alienated themselves from this. How could we've come to right this moment as quickly as I lay my hand on a woman that she could immediately think of that i'm attempting to seduce her or who's accustomed to what. for the reason that I have been given frightened of having a noisy "take your hands off me" shout in return, I merely usually am no longer very mushy. i like your question (it touched me :P), and perchance we are able to all bit by bit carry decrease back the touching in this worldwide!!

There is no validity to this question. Simply its not true. Muhammad (PBUH) was not always in the cave when he received revelations so ask your "friend" to explain that.

Sure it's possible, but I don't think it's likely. However, even if it is true, does that make the principles you admire any less valid? And I am not muslim.
