It depends on how serious it is. If it's really serious then you could take legal action, but you're probably better to make sure you behave in a manner which shows everyone it isn't true. If anyone asks you about what he has said, say something like, "Do you think there are two sides to every story? If you do, then ask yourself if I am the sort of person he is talking about?"
Aim for the long term, not the short term. It's important for them to think he is the nasty person (which he is), not the victim.
Whatever you do, don't go back to him. He's just shown his true character.

keep your chin up and know that you are a better person than he is.
my husband was speading rumors that I was sleeping around, last year, and I wasn't. i just wasn't having sex with him because he lacks personal hygiene and he STINKS. He's the only guy I've ever been with, and he never appologized for telling everyone what he did.

The people that know you know better. He is just on a little revenge seeking. Put him on ignore and realize that this could back fire on him.
