The original AM/FM/Tape unit in my girlfriend's 2002 Focus started to lose radio signal and then the tape drive started to drag as well. That unit was replaced with an AM/FM/CD unit about 4 months ago (thank you ebay).

That worked great until recently. The new unit is now starting to lose its radio signal much like the old one. Any known chronic problems with these radios?

Anyone know how to fix the bad radio?

Could the alternator on the car be blowing out the power supply on the radio?

Should I buy a Kia?

Thanks, Mike.

I have also seen problems with corrosion in the antenna base on the roof of the vehicle causing reception problems, and have replaced a couple bad antenna leads. The radios do fail quite regularly though, and I would have to chalk that up to poor quality audio components. A good aftermarket unit may be the better replacement, just make sure you get a quality installation, nothing worse than a poor fitting radio.

I've not heard of this being a commonly reported problem, and no recalls have been issued on any radio factory installed in a focus. If you are having problems with them, you might check to see if per chance you either have hooked something up incorrectly, or are throwing voltage spikes due to a fault in your charging system.

As to buying a KIA, if you want to get a Korean made cheap auto, go right ahead.

As to losing radio signal, have you checked your antenna and its cable?

All GM cars are better than any ford. Ford has had to cheapen their product to afford the unions to build it. It's a case of over paid staff vs a superior product. Also, I would not be surprised if there was a lot of noise on the power from the alternator, just another cost cutting measure.

I had that problem, and it turned out to be overheatingt from the heater duct behind the dash board. When the problem starts again, try turning on the airconditioner. If it goes away after a couple minutes. You have a heater duct leak.
