French. I have been learning Japanese from beginner level for about 2 months now and it's unlike any other language, so you have nothing else in your linguistic experience to aid you. As a native English speaker Italian was very easy to pick up, as it is ridiculously similar. Japanese is at the opposite end of the spectrum to English. Languages like Spanish, Italian, French and even Russian, among other European languages, are somewhat similar in sentence structure and such, so I believe French would be best if you need to learn something basic very quickly. Pronunciation wise I'd say both are difficult in their own ways, you have to be more careful with the rhythm and stress of syllables and words in Japanese, whereas in French there's the difficult sounds to learn that English doesn't have. So weigh up your pros and cons. I'd go with French.

Generally speaking, French is by far easier than Japanese for an English speaker.
But just for a school test, Japanese might be easier because most of the students would take French.

French. Especially as it'll be a PAPER test only!!
You don't want to have to learn two sets of syllabic characters, 1 or 2 thousand Chinese characters, and a whole new grammatical system just for a TEST do you?????????
At least French uses practically the same alphabet as English, and the grammar is pretty close too..!
Anyone who comes on here and rants about how EASY they found it learn Japanese is probably either exaggerating, or lying to make themselves seem more intelligent than they really are..!

When a similar question was posted here in Yahoo! ANSWERS, the consensus seemed to be that French is easier.

Japanese is symbol based, so it would probably be harder to pick up for beginners. French on the other hand is latin based as are many other languages and probably would be your best bet.

French. It shall always be popular. Japanese as a language is not as important as before. First, have you mastered your mother tongue?
