Unless you have a permit to carry you probably can't carry it in the cab of the vehicle. There are many different ways this is addressed by individual states so you need to research the laws. Check with the local authorities, either the county sheriff or the police chief.

In almost all states you are required to have a concealed weapons permit to have a handgun in your vehicle.
There may still be a state or two in the deep south that still allows it, I'm not real sure. Call your local Police and ask!
If you get caught and don't have a permit, you will lose the gun and go to jail and will probably never be able to get a permit!

You have to have a license to carry the gun in any vehicle. And if you do it has to be in open view. With no cartridges in the chamber! Or in the vehicle. Usually I wouldn't recommend carrying a gun to anyone! Call your local pd and get some answers. Now I have a question for you. The gun was registered when you bought it right? If you got it passed down to you you might find yourself in serious trouble down the line just for possessing it. This is how drive bys occur! The best way for you to protect yourself is using your cell and calling the police or your CB. Which ever one you have. The police will gladly assist you. Post Script. Try mace or pepper spray. They both work great. Stun guns I wouldn't recommend either.

You would have to follow the carrry law of every state you travel though, some states have no permits and do not allow a weapon to be carried without it being locked away

In some states it is legal , notably the western ones. Don't try it in my state ,NJ. or any north eastern state. I too am an OTR trucker and I understand why you would want to.

Im most areas, a car/truck is considered an extension of one's house, therefore it is ok. If you still have doubts, check with your local pd.
