I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L engine. The check engine light comes on once the fuel gauge goes below 1/2 tank. I checked the codes and it showed vacuum leaks. I changed the gas cap. The light went off but then comes back on as described above. What else should I check? Thanks for the help

Oh another Dodge with a screwy check engine light!!!!!!I had a 2001 2500 dodge ram and had the same problem constantly. I thought it was the gas cap because I read in the manual if it isn't on right, the check engine light will come on. However the light would come on when I hadn't gotten gas in awhile and the cap wasn't touched. The light would go on and off at random with no explaination. I took it to a mechanic, the light had decided to go off and the mechanic said he couldn't find anything wrong .....So I would say its not the gas cap, take it to a mechanic or do like I did....Get rid of the damn thing.

Something is loose and making the light blink- or maybe not making the light blink. Those lights don't have any kind of voice. Get an OBD2 code check done to find out what caused the light to come on. "Check engine" means, check the engine, not the light, or the trunk or passengers' opinions. Car part stores sometimes will do free code checks, but they are forbidden from making diagnoses. They can give you the trouble codes and maybe tell you what each code means.

Check your EVAP canister, your hoses (check for crack or loose hose) anything dealing with the emission would caused this problem. Go to auto zone for a free code testing and check each problem that is described on the list.I had a PO440 reading and I went through each item as listed and found the problem.

i took the truck to a mechanic, they have a portable computer that hooks up to the car and he found nothing wrong.he just reset the computer in the car and the light went off, that was good enough to pass the smog check. till this day the light is on, after 4 years.lol
