I have a formal next week and wanted to do soft curls with a GHD straightener, I was wondering what the best technique to achieve a soft, yet not scraggly look

I like hot rollers. They provide the best curls with the longest hold because they are allowed to heat up and cool down making the curls stay longer.. and not that much hairspray will be needed. A curling iron is okay too, but pin the curls to your head to let cool... it won't create the same look but will be sufficient... and more hairspray will be needed.

wash your hair, lightly towel dry it and comb some setting lotion through it and then use some salon type plastic mesh rollers and set your hair, after you hair is dry remove rollers, shake your hair and then use your fingers to place your curls into the style that you desire
