Snot serversa purpose in your nose 100% of the time and it is thjere to prevent any dust, dirt and most germs from getting into your lungs.

Whilst the air we "inspire" (a nice fancy word for inhale) will get warmed up in the nostrels, the snot or nasal mucus will actually remove any harmful particals from the air and that is why your snot is sometimes hard and dry... it's full shiite, so when you get a cold your body is trying its hardest to prevent any more germs getting in by increasing the level of bodilly secretion in the nose produced.

Not only that, but when you sneeze, this is the body sayign that there was something rather nasty in the last breath of air you took in... that's why you will almost always feel a twitch oritch in your nostrels and a slightly familiar aroma before the actual sneeze.

Hope that helps, but you can always look it up or ask netDoc or something. Sure they ahve much more technical terms for everything I just told you.

oh, and they might be able to tell you how it is produced.

It's part of your bodies cleansing mechanisms. I'm sure there is a more refined word for"snot" but I just can't thing of it at the moment. Just don't bottle it and save it, It has served it's only purpose. Trust me, I wouldn't lie about something this delicate.

It improves revenues for kleenex manufacturers. :-)

The hair in your nose and the mucus produced by the mucous membranes exist to help filter out dust particles before they reach your lungs. Sometimes, if we breathe in something that irritates the nose or lungs mucus production is increased and we get a runny nose. Viruses can also attack the mucus membranes and cause extra watering and extra mucus production. Unfortunately, the excess mucus and water makes you very uncomfortable and doesn't do any better as far as self-cleaning goes.
