The Soul moves in and out of the fetus right up until birth. After birth it is locked into the idea of the body until the gentle touch of death frees it from the idea of bondage to the physical.
This is a moment of great joy to the soul.

When the brain accumulates enough cells to transmit and receive signals, the designated soul for that body enters it in accordance with its destiny, from among the large pool of souls not yet granted liberation from the cycle of Birth and death, owing to its accumulated Plus and Minus Credits of Good and Bad Acts. This is the Eastern faith and stands the test of reasoning.
This stage of accepting a new soul by the growing fetus has been variously indicated as the second or third month of growth. Some consider that the fourth month when the conception has been finally accepted by the Mother's body is the time fo the Soul to emter. If we obseve the behaviour of the fetus after this phase, like showing definite influences on the mother's moods and behaviour, there is much to commend this view.

When the heart has its first tick. From then on, the heart has to continue ticking; until death, when it stops doing so, for ever. Medical science is reported to be still reasearching for the 'cause' of the first movement of the heart. The Islamic texts say that the first tick coincides with the inbreathing of soul into a body. About 40 days after conception. From that time on, the person with a body + soul needs to be given a name, in case of premature birth as a dead body whose soul had been seperated within the womb of mother. The Heart and the Soul have co-existence. God knows better!

I don't believe in a soul that is separate to the body, but it grows with the baby, I suppose. I wouldn't put excessive rights on a foetus because it is only a potential person - it is not really exposed to the world, and cannot think yet. Yes, it can feel, but so can animals.
Plus, embryos can split into twins up to 14days - so you cannot say it is already a human life at that point...it could be two. And Pangel has done her reading! All foetuses are female in the beginning - hence why men have nipples.

SB 3.31.1 P Lord Kapila' s Instructions on the Movements of the Living Entities Everything is done by the supervision of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Material nature supplies the body, but it does so under the direction of the Supersoul. It is said in Bhagavad-gita that a living entity is wandering in this material world on a chariot made by material nature. The Supreme Lord, as Supersoul, is always present with the individual soul. He directs material nature to supply a particular type of body to the individual soul according to the result of his work, and the material nature supplies it. Here one word, retah-kanasrayah, is very significant because it indicates that it is not the semen of the man that creates life within the womb of a woman; rather, the living entity, the soul, takes shelter in a particle of semen and is then pushed into the womb of a woman. Then the body develops. There is no possibility of creating a living entity without the presence of the soul simply by sexual intercourse. The materialistic theory that there is no soul and that a child is born simply by material combination of the sperm and ovum is not very feasible. It is unacceptable. 751021mw.joh Conversations Harikesa: But they say the child in the womb is not living. They say it's not life yet. Only after it takes birth. Prabhupada: That is said by you. You, the tenth-class rascal, you say like that. No sane man says like that. Because you are a tenth-class rascal--you have no knowledge--you say like that. They are... The so-called scientists, they are tenth-class rascals. Harikesa: Until the child is moving there is no life. Prabhupada: Moving, it is not moving? Harikesa: No. It doesn't move until after seven months. Prabhupada: Then why the dead child cannot move, rascal? Pusta Krsna: It's developing, it's growing. That's moving also. Prabhupada: No, no, if moving is not there, then the dead child is also not moving. Why he is not moving again? Harikesa: I don't understand. Prabhupada: A dead child comes; it is not moving. But does it come to movement again? Pusta Krsna: No. Prabhupada: Then? Harikesa: Oh. Prabhupada: He is another rascal. He takes so much time to answer. (laughter) Pusta Krsna: This idea of the "devil citing scripture," Prabhupada, is very common. Prabhupada: Devils, all devils. Harikesa: They wanted to write an article about this for BTG, and everybody was sitting around giving these examples. Prabhupada: Yes, think over. Write article. If there was no life who is at a certain stage in the womb, wherefrom the movement comes, if there was no life? Harikesa: They say it develops to the point... Prabhupada: But why it does not develop in a dead child, rascal? The same child, if it comes out dead, why the movement does not develop? Harikesa: Well, that one already developed properly and then died. That child already developed properly. Prabhupada: No, the process is the same. It was not moving. At a cetain stage it is moving. Similarly, if it is not moving, then wait for a certain stage; it will move. Why it is decomposed? Harikesa: But that dead child was moving and then died. Prabhupada: How it became dead, nonsense? The condition is the same, no movement. So how do you say "dead"? Why do you say "dead"? The distinction is it was not moving, and it is now not moving, so why do you call "dead"? In such a foolish society, how people can be happy? Harikesa: Well, it's the mother's choice to kill the child or not. If the child isn't born yet, it hasn't come to life in the world, so the mother has the responsibility; she can kill it or not because it's her thing, her child, her production, so she can kill it or not. Prabhupada: So I can kill you; I am your guru. Harikesa: Yes. Prabhupada: Who can say anything? I can kill you. Why police is there? I can say, "He is my disciple. He has fully surrendered. I can kill him." That's all. Will that argument save me from police action? Pusta Krsna: No. The child is so dependent on the mother, if the mother mistreats the opportunity, she also is punished. Prabhupada: Yes. Harikesa: But if the child would cause the mother so much anxiety... Prabhupada: Don't talk like foolish. Don't talk of that. It is waste of time. If it is the property of the mother, mother can kill at any time. Why at a certain point if the mother kills child she is hanged? If the mother has got the liberty to kill the child, she can kill at any time. Harikesa: Well, it's just a tumor. It's like a tumor. Prabhupada: Then why you say that it is mother's right to kill? And tumor, can you bring life in tumor? Kick simply on their face, on their nose. That is the only thing to treat with such... Murkhasya latausadhih. Such fools in the society, they should be hanged. Misleading the whole population. Harikesa: Even the big, big philosophers simply say that life doesn't start until it comes out of the womb. They are just convinced of it. They are ju

It doesnt......In the Bible the word “soul” appears in many translations as a rendering for the Hebrew word ne´phesh and the Greek word psy·khe´. (See, for example, Ezekiel 18:4 and Matthew 10:28 in the Authorized Version, New English Bible, Revised Standard Version and Douay Version.) These same Hebrew and Greek terms have also been translated as “being,” “creature” and “person.”
Describing the creation of the first man, Adam, the opening book of the Bible says: “Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul [ne´phesh].” (Genesis 2:7) We may note that the Bible does not say that ‘man received a soul,’ but that “man came to be a living soul.”
It is also noteworthy that the terms ne´phesh and psy·khe´ are applied to animals. Concerning the creation of sea and land creatures, the Bible says: “God went on to say: ‘Let the waters swarm forth a swarm of living souls [“creatures,” New English Bible] and let flying creatures fly over the earth’ . . . God proceeded to create the great sea monsters and every living soul that moves about . . . ‘Let the earth put forth living souls according to their kinds, domestic animal and moving animal and wild beast of the earth according to its kind.’”—Genesis 1:20-24.
We read in the Bible that the human soul is born. (Genesis 46:18) It can eat or fast. (Leviticus 7:20; Psalm 35:13) It can weep and faint. (Jeremiah 13:17; Jonah 2:7) A soul can swear, crave things and give way to fear. (Leviticus 5:4; Deuteronomy 12:20; Acts 2:43) A person might kidnap a soul. (Deuteronomy 24:7) The soul can be pursued and put in irons. (Psalm 7:5; 105:18) Are these not the kind of things done by or to fleshly people? Do not such passages of Scripture clearly establish that the human soul is the entire man?

A lot of people say at the time of conception. Life is in the blood. Blood enters the baby at about 14 days. Although no one, but God, really knows for sure, but I believe right from conception to a 14 day old baby in the womb.

Now, the question arises here as how the soul enters the father’s body ? The answer is, through breathing. And how do they come out ? During the process of copulation, the internal ‘energy wave’ moves faster. Which produces heat in the body resulting in the separation of some atom and molecules (Which had entered the body of the father through breathing, taking the form of cells (sperm) in the testis) from the body and make faster movement with the increase of heat, and they head towards any where they get open space. It is like the flow of water washing away some part of the clay on course. The structure of testis of a man is made up of both negative and positive molecules. It means all atoms in it contains proton, neutron and electrons. Where as, the ovary of a woman contains only negative atoms i.e. it contains major portion of neutron and some part of electron. During copulation, getting the head the sperms move ahead to unite with the atom (ovum) of the woman which is larger in size than the sperm. Only a single sperm succeeds in uniting with the ovum. The sperm utilizes the ovum as a protective covering for itself and within the protective boundary of the ovum it get nourished. Molecules which are successful become foetus, and grow to be a boy or girl, according to their ‘sanskar’ (systematic memory). Feeding on the molecules and atoms present in the uterus, the creature (foetus) makes its growth. In the food of men and women, there are molecules and atoms, which after the digestion of the food, become the part of body. Getting food from mother, the foetus also makes growth of its body. This is the episode of that sperm which is successful.
During the combining process, other remaining sperms which could not get the protection of the ovum, get destroyed fast and turn into souls. They are very delicate, for which they can’t survive the adverse condition. Molecules get destroyed, by feeding on each other also. Souls, for a new life being mingled with air enters the body through the respiration. After passing through the lungs they mingle with the blood of the father. Then going through different metabolic process of the body they become part of testis, getting the form of a reproductive cells. There, in the body of the father, they get the feeling of heaven or hell. They remain in the testis, waiting for a new birth. After getting heat, they start flowing out breaking the bond. Like this, for a life soul, it takes years to get a new birth until it gets proper co-incidence, because one or two out of several sperms can combine with the ovum and the rest get destroyed to go back to the queue again. In the uterus, apart from the foetus, the other germs also get the feeding, but the atoms (of the foetus body) can’t eat anything. They just cohere to each other for creating the shape of the body. Like this, noting is your own in this creation of eternity and none are stranger to you either. When your own body is not actually yours, then what do you expect from others ? This is a hard fact that, if one gets the feeding, the other has to lose its life. Inside and outside the body there are several lives getting flourished and getting destroyed at same time. Like earth, inside the body also, there are scenes of flood, quacks, heat cold, and with this many lives are affected. The reason behind the molecules of the germs achieving body or getting a shape, is their crave for getting a life of infinity. Every atom has a desire for improving itself. That is why, their SANSKAR, in a seed form gradually improves itself to reach the level that of a human being. This is the result of a serial development that takes place.

I believe it enters at conception.
Pangel, Rocky is right sex IS determined at fertilization. All fetuses LOOK female up to a point only because the folds of skin that will become either the vulva or penis LOOK exactly the same until the that stage of development.
