I own a Canon eos 400D and think it is the dog's gonads, anyone agree???
So easy to use yet it has so many features that are seen on the 30d, a more expensive camera.
Iknow the 400D is not a pro camera, but i do not think it should be classed as an entry level camera either as it sports some of the same features as a pro camera and it also has the new sensor cleaning system.

I got the 350D and I am about 18,000 images in since year last August. Always biased when it comes to cameras - Canon all the way. I am thinking of the 400D as my next purchase as I think that the 5D is a tad expensive at present.

I've not tried the 400D, but I did compare it's predecessors (300D,. 350D, rebel, rebel XL (depending one where you live)) to the 20D and the make and feel is day and night between the two. Also the layout of the buttons on the more expensive ones makes for easier operation and they do not have buttons in the paces you need to hold the body of the camera.

The best way to know you like a body is to try using it. For the size of my hands anything smaller than the 20D did feel cramped to hold on. While the 20D immediately gave me a solid comfortable grip that comes naturally.

In a total setting, the price of the body doesn't weigh-in all that much compared to the prices of lenses, so I went for the 20D, and haven't regretted it ever since. Also the cheaper models come with that kit-lens (a EF/S 18-55 I think) that doesn't have IS nor USM, and feels like it's not made to last (It's optics are OK so it's not a total loss). The higher end models can be obtained without lenses or with a much better kit lens (a EF/S 18-85 IS USM).

So my conclusion is indeed as it is packaged it's an entry camera that allows you to use the EF lenses and after a while you might want to upgrade the body (although I'd agree wait for the higher end to have another round or two of updates before I'd do it if you have a 400D now)

Buying a digital SLR means you choose a lens system, and from there on you choose the rest of the components.

Yes, the 400D is a top notch camera. It's an affordable DSLR...perfect for someone wanting to go a step beyond the point & shoot digicam.

It's supplied with a crappy kit lens though...so you need to buy a better lens or two ($$$$$)
It's still missing the Spot Metering etc etc, which some people have been known to grumble about. And not everyone likes it's 'plasticky' feel or very small size.
But, where it really shines...is it's excellent image quality (and ultimately that's what people want).
Happy snapping!

I have a 350D, which is brilliant. If the 400D is better, it will be a superb camera even if it's not a professional one.
