That could have a very wide range of answers depending on what religion or denomination you are talking about, I am a Bible teacher so I can only speak to what the Bible says. In the Bible, a priest is a intercessor. Since man (Israelites were sinful) and God was holy there could be no contact. Priests where cleansed and sacrifices made for them so that they could be holy, and then come into the temple to the mercy seat and offer up a sacrifice for the sinner and take the blood of that sacrifice to the Mercy Seat and he would be forgiven. The New testament explains that the Great High Priest is Jesus Christ and that when He comes to the Mercy Seat where God sits, He brings His own blood which is perfect and holy, and eternal (sinc He is eternal God, and perfect man) and that God then accepts all those who come to Him through Christ and gives them eternal life.
Having said that, the priestly ministry is to present others to God in intercessory prayer and that prayer will accomplish spiritual growth in the lives of those for whom we pray. IN many places in the Bible we are told to pray for one another.

All believers, all Christians, are called priests according to the bible. See 1 Peter 2:9 and Revelation 1:6. The notion that there is a separate class of believers who are somehow suppose to be more holy or more "called" than others is not scriptural and has led to an almost infinite amount of division in the body of Christ. Having said that, as priests, we are called to live a life devoted to God, loving God, praying for others, ministering the word of life to others, encouraging others, etc.

It is the most wonderful life there is!!!

But it is not for a few. It is for ALL that believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and have yielded their lives to Him.

God bless!!!

someone in the Priestly life has the ability to devote themselves entirely to God through prayer and service to Gods people in a way that married people cannot, if you have a commited relationship with someone then that person needs most of your time and energy and vice versa to make the relationship work.
Priests do not have this commitment in the same way and see their relationship as marriage to the church.

By controlling their bodily desires they are rejecting the physical world and showing God they love his world. This is how you ask, knock or seek.
