Muslims i am a convert and there are many things that i personally have not been able to research can someone help me with the interpretation of 4:34

4:34 Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because God has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what God would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For God is Most High, great (above you all).

-this is something i have wondered about myself and a non-muslim also questioned it in another question of mine

*i know this is a translation but i am still in the process of learning Arabic so your help would be appreciated

asalamwalaikum,
Sakina

it's a 'context' in a whole.
plz read also the two previous ayat (4:32-33) and the next one (4:35). you will understand the 'story' behind it, in relation with ayat 11-12 of the same surah (4:11-12). check it too.
'nusyuz' (4:34) means obligee of wife - husband in the marriage.
'hakam' / hakiim in ayat 35 means a judge.

wassalaamu 'alaikum.
peace.

It's a PC or Moderate translation at that.

The translation I have is:

If you experience rebellion from the women, you shall first talk to them, then (you may use negative incentives like) deserting them in bed, then you may (as a last alternative) beat them.
[4:34]

I don't find this good at all.

In the U.S. if a woman doesn't want to have sex and her husband forces her, she can have him arrested and jailed, just as if he were a stranger taking sex by force.

Now that's protetcting a woman!

In the U.S. it is illegal to have sex, consentual or otherwise, with any girl under the age of 17.

The girls history with men or sex is NOT allowed to be talked about in the courts.

No girl is punished for having sex, it's always the men that get punished, unless, of course, the girl is an adult and she has sex with young boys.

News report:

A Saudi court has sentenced a gang rape victim (the woman who was raped) to 90 lashes of the whip because she was alone in a car with a man to whom she was not married

WHY should one have (be forced to) to learn another language to become a 'member' of a religion?
WHY should anyone WANT to be a muslim in the first place?
When will the human race realise that ALL religions are devised by man? Devised for a specific purpose - to keep you in your place by virtue of FEAR.
Set yourself free. Become an atheist. You will not have to wear silly clothes, funny hats, hide your faces, kill innocent people, learn Klingon, belive in fairy tales, books of lies and wild exaggerations, pray to an imaginary entity five times a day or any other such submissions to stupidity.

Just in case you have never seen the truth, do visit www.prophetmohammed.co.uk and be afraid of your choice... IF you have an open mind.

Atheism - the logical choice (Thnx, jz)

it is hard usually when somebody has more than one wife to deal with them in ordinary matter. So this verse is mostly for polygamists.

All this is getting boring. What is the question? If you want to chat' about all this then go on a chat site. You are not asking any questions but trying to provoke a debate. This is not the site for that.
