Take notes...it will enhance your memory when you write your studies down, best in outline form.
Write detailed full sentences when answering exam questions.

First of all, be more attentive in class... This way, you'll have a head start. Take detailed notes, but try to keep them well structured, that way, you visual memory will help you learn better (as you'll remember how the words look in the page and if you're missing something when remembering)

Also, try to keep focused when learning (and don't learn by heart!) try to remember everything with a logic and also try to relate everything that you're learning.

And last, but not least: SLEEP! A good night's sleep will help you learn better next morning. Most of people learn better when they wake up! The brain has a fresh start and you memorize things better and faster when you're not tired.

study with a friend so you know the material better.
ask your teacher for help.
if you can't stand your teacher then:
go to guidance and ask for a tudor. upper classman usually know how to do the work especially if they had that teacher.
it all depends on the teacher on how well or how bad an essay is written.
