Rachel, hi!

must say the answer to this would depend on your view of what the globe is...

to the modern-day housewife, globalization comes to her doorstep. she gets mangoes from pakistan, toys from china, trinklets from hong kong, cars from the US, computers from japan, and mobilephones from Europe. she doesn't require an understanding of English, because these "globalized" companies want to speak her language.

where once globalization meant you going global, it now means the world coming to you.

then again, if you want to travel the world, you'll soon realize that beyond the travel agents, airports and 5-star restaurants, you'll find very little use for the English language!

i'll be the first to admit that it's surely the easiest way to get around, as most people may have atleast a rudimentary understanding of English... but it won't help too much...

new-age Globalization is all about retaining your self-identity, and still being a citizen of the World...

hope this helped... enjoy!
