If you really want to get into the season I suggest Germany. They have great Christmas markets in just about every town and you can sip on some Gluhwein and enjoy other Christmas time favorites. New York city is also great this time of year with the Macy's display, Rockefeller center, the Radio city Christmas spectacular, etc. Any major city will have great new years celebrations and fireworks. Of course you can also go someplace warm as many previous answers have suggested.

I'd go for Philippines or Thailand, if you're budget conscious.
For the Philippines, Cebu, Boracay, and Davao are top choices, I think. I lived in the first two places at one point or another so that would be a great place to start. Stay away from Manila as much as you can if you don't want to get stuck in traffic for hours. December is major shopping month.

If you want more sun and surf, try my base now, Saipan. It's a US protectorate so all you need to bring is either your birth certificate or a passport to get in. It has loads of open white sand beaches for tanning, swimming, diving, snorkeling! You can have anywhere from 3-4 different cultural experiences on this melting pot of an island. There's hardly any major crime here.... time almost stops! You can go by Guam or Japan (although I'd stay away from Japan for the simple reason that it's the major airline hub and it's busy time these days).

It depends on what you can afford - Australia, etc., is very expensive and prices are pretty much the same as England. I'd suggest Egypt - prices are very low and you are guaranteed sunshine. It's probably the best winter sun deal you will get. The Red Sea Riviera (Sharm El Sheikh) has some good hotels and also plenty of soft sand and clear blue (and warm!) sea. Buying things is very cheap. You can probably get a good deal too, since tourism to there eased up a bit after some terrorist activity a few years back so the Egyptians are keen to win back the tourists.
Hope you enjoy your winter break.

You might enjoy Switzerland. Spend some time in a traditional Swiss mountain farm village. A vacation at Gimmelwald is for those who want to really take it slow because there is not much "excitement" but there is plenty of "atmosphere". The best activity is to take a walking tour of the town through "Times Square", Main Street, the Water Fountain, the old school house and fire station, and Walter's bar.

If you can afford it, do what I am doing (and save all year to afford!), choose Sydney, Australia, the happiest city in the world, a way to escape Father Christmas, get some sun and see the best fireworks in the world for New Year's Eve!
It's a fascinating, beautiful city, with plenty to see!
If the 22-hour flight scares you, stop off at Singapore for a couple of days, it is great fun!

Cuba (unless you are American), Bahamas, Brazil, South Africa, or Hong Kong. All of these places are nice and hot at this time of year and they know how to celebrate the season.
or
Go on a Caribbean Cruise, as the Cruise Companies lay on excellent celebrations over the Christmas Festive Period and you get to see a different place every day.

Austria. My mum & stepdad went there last year............they are pensioners, and they absolutley loved it. IT was so like a traditional Xmas, with all the snow and sleigh rides, reindeer etc. The scenery was just like a picture postcard. I would recommend anyone to go, if my mum & s/dad loved it so much, i am sure most people would. Good luck in finding somewhere, and have a great time.
Blessings

I've always felt Sydney is the place to be. The climate is hot without being uncomfortable. The atmosphere is great. The flight is long so stop over somewhere for a couple of days.
