Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v:

Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari:

that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. ..."

-------

This hadith is considered a bit weak because of one missing narrator. So, some people say its not enough to completely ban music, although the music should not have any other ***** stuff in it. Especially words of shirk in the lyrics.

Singing is clearly allowed, there are many instance in the ahadith of the Prophet(pbuh) being ok with it.

Especially they should not be of the type which distracts you from performing your regular duties in Islam. Singing praises of the Prophet(pbuh) is NOT required in Islam, he was a very modest man, and wouldn't have wanted it.

The Chishtia Sufi Order(Silsilah) allow instrumental music, for Qawwali etc. Amir Khusro a Sufi was also a musician.
