I would be more concerned as there are conditions that cause erosion of the bone mass. It is possibly just an inflamation of the bursa, or an arthritis and heating pads or ointments may soothe the pain...however, I would schedule him for a Dr.s' visit as soon as possible.Without an X-ray, it is difficult to determine the possible cause and a blood chemistry would also be needed. It could be from a torn ligament or multiple other causes, but this is not the way to find out...Go to your doctor and get definitive answers not guesses.

If your husband can't get an immediate appointment with your doctor then I would go to Accident and emergency at the hospital on a weekday morning before 10am when it won't be busy.

Get him some Ibuprofen to reduce the inflammation and pain. If it persists go and see a doctor.. while he may have just knocked it he could have torn his cruciate ligaments or cartilledge in his knee by twisting it or hyper extending it backward.
