before the blisters have scabbed and while a fever is present. sometimes they are even contagious before they show symptoms because the virus sometimes takes 10 days to show itself.

Week 1.Spots appearing Contagious
Week 2.Spots are dry,kids can go to school
Week 3 Scabs coming off,Contagious

Chicken pox is actually contagious for teh 10 day incubation period BEFORE the spots come out. It is very rare for somebody who comes in contact woth a child AFTER the spots have already shown to catch chicken pox. I know this because I have a blood deficiency which makes it very easy for me to contract the virus....I have had pox 8 times and shingles 3 times...nice! when u should only have it once!
