When one travels on a train, say a TGV from Geneva to Paris. Even if the journey of c. 500 km takes 3 hours, it is SHORTER than the one hour flight, for a variety of reasons:
1.On aeroplanes (British spelling!), one has to be present at the check-in at least 1-3 hours before hand. On a train, one can be there 1 minute before departure.
More reasons are:
1. Trains have an immaculate safety record. There are less aeroplane crashes, but they will kill more than a plane.
2. A train allows you to see the country and the area where you are travelling
3. Night Trains are easier to sleep in than a plane, because on a plane you always hear the continuous whine of the engines - a train only has a clickety-clack of the wheels on the rails
4.Trains are cool and make people feel happy and nostalgic. Train crashes are much less frequent because their is no risk of hitting a train underneath you.
Hope this helped,

Maybe people choose to ride trains because the airports and airlines mistreat their passengers?
That's the reason I ride the train.
I refuse to tolerate the indignities foisted on a passively acquiescent public at airport terminals and aboard commercial airliners.
The events of 11 September 2001 do not justify suspension of inalienable rights or the "CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES".
The train is comfortable - - - especially in first class, where you can lie down and sleep, as the movement of the train rocks you.
The dining car is wonderful - - - delicious meals, invigorating conversation, and wonderful passing scenery, with the train rocking back and forth.
The train is nostalgia - - - ride it while you still have the chance - - - before it fades away into history.
There's no searches or hassles on the train.
If you want to be armed, it's okay - - - just don't advertise it.
A private citizen can still feel safe, knowing he has the means to stop the bad guys.
Now, how long will it be before some petty government bureaucrat ruins that for us?

People traveling to bordering states (Example: NYC to Philly) can get to their destination faster than flying. This is due to the amount of security in airports. Another reason why people take trains is because, believe it or not, some are still afraid of flying. The price of an airline ticket is just as competitive as a rail ticket in most circumstances.

Trains do less damage to the environment. You can sit back, relax and see all those idiots stuck in traffic on the M25.
