if your stomach is empty, it will cause hiccough to expell the extra air in your gut. another cause of it can be gallbladder pathology. check it with your internist please.

Diaphragmatic irritation and not air under diaphragm .

It is caused by air under your diaghram. You hiccup trying to expel that air.
