I think he mean that either conditions are unavoidable and definite; the only way of ending the state of being in these conditions is waiting it out. --To clarify regarding the latter condition is probably that the interval in question precedes rather than follows the event. The interval until birth is 'cured' comes after the event.

It's kind of a stupid quote. It's meant to sound profound but it doesn't really cover all of it's aspects adequately. I guess it makes the most sense in it's simplest form: we have no alternative for living and dying except for the time that we are alive. Alternative may not be the best word choice but it's the best I can do with the time I'm willing to devote to this question!
