There are many ways to keep your hair soft and exquisite. First, make sure your diet includes all the proteins and vitamins you hair needs to be healthy in the first place. Avoid caffeine, carbonation, high fats, and nicotine. The last internal trick is to get enough sleep! Your hair can not become beautiful, if its not healthy to start with.
External tricks are useful to keep hair healthy. Here are a few that I use:
Wash only the roots when you shampoo. [unless of course something gets into the rest of your hair. Conditioner is a type of soap, so do not worry about shampooing the entire length.] Note the Ph level on the shampoo you buy. Stick to lower level or Ph 7. Never opt for a level 8 or higher because it can make your hair brittle.
Use thick conditioners, and leave in for 3 minutes or more before rinsing. Leaving the conditioner in for a full 3 minutes or more allows it to replace the moisture in your hair that was taken out from shampooing. Make sure that your hair stays warm during this the conditioning. It keeps the cuticle open. Keep in mind that some conditioners create an illusion of healthy hair by coating it with wax. This just creates a layer that needs to be washed away by a harsher shampoo...thus damaging your hair.
Use cool to cold water for rinsing. This is said to improve the shine, but its not necessarily true. It does however convince the scales in your hair to lay flat, producing the image of smoothness.
Try not to brush your hair more then absolutely necessary. It causes split ends. To lessen that problem, try combs. Or if you have curly hair, finger brush it while in the shower.
Blow dry your hair on cool mode or let air dry. Heat will dry out your hair even more.
Some extra tips:
Use real Mayonnaise. It sounds disgusting, but it truly works wonders. You can wear gloves or put in on with your bare hands. Make sure the container is not from the refrigerator because its too shocking to your scalp. After you have applied the mayonnaise, wrap your hair with plastic wrap. This will keep you tidy. If the smell of mayo is discussing to you, try mixing in peppermint or vanilla extract. Leave it in for a few hours, then rinse with vinegar.
Warm the vinegar up a little. You can use apple vinegar to improve the smell. The vinegar will cleanse your head of grease from the mayo. Keep in mind how strong vinegar smells, and try to do this on a day you can just putz around your house.
After all these tips, you should have beautiful soft hair! Visit the first source for tips on how to grow your hair quickly! I hope this helps.
Good luck!

A tip on not to make it more brittle or dry is not to use very hot water on it, try not to wash everyday & invest in a shampoo and conditioner ragem espessialy designed for your hair type, Look for dry & damaged products. also use a mask once a week as well as a leave in conditoner too. As for the grow my hair longer secrets when you do find an answer please LET ME KNOW. good luck.
oh p.s: if you can stand doing it, give your hair a shine boost by turning the water on cold after a shower & giving it a blast, that should help smooth as well as give it heaps of shine.

Olive oil makes your hair soft. Apply olive oil thoroughly from the roots to tip of your hair five or 10 minutes before you wash your hair.
Mix aloe vera gel with castor oil and olive oil and massage it on your scalp. Wash with mild shampoo after half an hour. This promotes hair growth and your hair becomes soft and shiny.
Henna is known to make hair silky, but many complain it dries the scalp. Mix some milk, water and two egg yolks with henna and apply it on your hair. This makes your hair soft and manageable.
Massage hair with warm coconut oil an hour before washing. Let it soak. Cover your head with a hot towel and wash your hair after an hour or so.
Make sure your hair is fully dry before you step out in the sun. When wet hair is exposed to direct sunlight, it can get damaged. It might result in hair fall and discolouration.

Natural homemade tips - hot oil massages on hair.
Hot oil massages: Warm 2 tsp. of olive oil and 2 tsp. coconut oil and gently massage every part of the scalp for 10-15 minutes. Rinse a towel in hot water, wipe and wind the hair around the head as it cools. Repeat 2 or 3 times to issue total saturation. After that, shampoo and rinse well. It is good for brittle dry hair.
Hot Caster oil massage: Warm ½ cup of castor oil, massage into scalp and gently comb it. Bind the hair with hot towel on the head, wait for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse. As it is home made is so good to use for scanty hair.
Clove oil honey massage. Stir well ½ cup of green olive oil with 1 cup of liquid honey. Shake vigorously. Keep the mixture to settle for a day or two. Massage into the scalp and comb it not touching the scalp. After massaging cover hair with plastic shower cap. Make it air tight to let the heat penetrate, leave like that for 20 to 30 minutes. Then shampoo and rinse well. It is good for dark hair to keep it shining and lustrous.
Natural homemade Protein treatment: Beat 1 egg and add slowly 1 tsp of olive oil and 1 tsp of vinegar. Apply it on hair and keep for 10 to 15 minutes. Apply shampoo and rinse well. This is good for all type of hair.
For oily hair Use any thin type of oil instead of olive oil and add lemon juice instead of vinegar.
If you feel sticky also it is worth to do protien treatement. Use mild shampoo twice and condition it next day.
Make sure your diet contains adequate amount of Vit C, B, E and Vit E for hair growth.
