I don't know for sure. (obviously) :)
But, I'd guess that the body is no longer of any use.

The spirit returns to the source that it came from. A Higher Power or energy source or whatever you would choose to call the creator of all things.

I don't see any reason to assume that any of us, can really know for sure what happens.....but that's my current opinion.

Understand the true meaning of Spirit and all becomes clear...

The Definition Spirit

The essence of life... spirit within every human being denotes the presence of a supernatural being... a source of energy not governed nor tamed by the forces of nature.

Spirit in true sense is that vital life force existing within every living being without which the body would decay and die. The most commonly used nomenclature for the term spirit is soul atman within the body of every living being.

The presence of spirit the soul within the body indicates that it is governing. This spirit soul atman survives without a body but not vice versa. It is the soul atman... the spirit present within the body that has manifested the body. Never otherwise!

In the vast expanse of the Cosmos... it is the spirits that play the governing role. Ever since the creation of the Cosmos by Almighty God... this spirit our soul within has guided the life of every living being with prompts from within.

Does this spirit breathe?

Yes, the respiration which is an essential part of life for every living being is required by this spirit. No body devoid of spirit within requires respiration. This vital life force... the process of respiration is an integral part of the life of spirit that enables the living being to go on and on.

Human beings can never interfere in the world of spirits. Something that we cannot see... the presence of which can only be felt... it is this energizing force of the spirit within every living being that makes the journey of life worthwhile and possible.

Talking of spirits... does not mean the world of spirit as understood by the filmmakers. The make believe world of the spirits as shown in the movies is not the absolute truth. If we say that one can call upon the spirits of the dead... yes, it is possible to invoke the power of any spirit by every human being.

By chanting of the requisite sacred mantra and the prayers... one can always invoke the power of any spirit that has yet to manifest. Once a spirit has manifested a bodily form... the power of this spirit can never be invoked by one.

I again repeat... the power of any spirit that has not yet manifested can be invoked by anyone. But once the spirit manifests a body... it can no more be invoked by one.

Jesus Christ came about 2000 years back. His spirit is always present around us. Any human being can invoke the spirit of Jesus Christ and seek the blessings provided one knows the exact mantra or the prayer to do so. More here- http://www.godrealized.com/glossary/Spirit.html

IMO...The short answer is: Your physical body returns to dust. Your spirit goes to God and is judged. The spirit then goes to paradise or hell, depending on whether or not you are a believer in Christ. Later on an incorruptible, glorified body will be united with your spirit and you will be resurrected in body and spirit to heaven. Each person makes the choice to live eternally with God in heaven or in eternal torment away from Him.

Your body decomposes, or becomes ash if environmentally aware. The spirit changes form. I can't say how I am only human. Energy however, cannot be destroyed! There are many views of what may happen i.e.(reincarnation, heaven/hell) but who knows, until you go through that door?

wow, what a myriad of answers ....ppl are really so confused and i dont claim to know all..just what the bible says....the body dies and returns to the earth (back to the dust from which it came) ..most ppl can agree on that...the big conflict comes with the rest...there is no such thing as a immortal soul...those two word never appear together anywhere in the bible...but i believe that that part of you that is you does return to God..there is no judgement now..the bible is pretty clear there will be two resurrections...read revelations....if you are blessed to be in the first resurrection you will be raised immortal with a new body...if not, you have to wait for the second one....and will be raised to life mortal...you will learn the true ways of God and if you are willing to accept them---you will also be immortal...if you reject Gods ways.. you will be destroyed (not put in some fire of eternal torment) just destroyed...and you will be seperated from God forever and the very memory of you will be wiped away...just read your bible.. dont believe the hype about this fierey eternal torment-- it is not biblical, and ppl dishonor God teaching such bs

The Bible is quite clear that the body will die and decompose into dust. "For from dust were thou formed, and unto dust thou shalt return"-Gen.3:19. The Bible is equally clear that it is God that gave us our spirit-Gen.2:7. After the sin of Adam and Eve mankind was immediately spiritually dead.Physical death came, inevitably, later. Our souls return to God, from whence they came. Unbelievers who die in their sin will never receive their spirit again. Believers will be resurrected in a spiritual body, with soul. Unbelievers must spend eternity in everlasting torment, in full knowledge of their choice through their souls. They will not ever again receive their spiritual rebirth because of their rejection of Jesus Christ.

There's no such thing as a spirit. Everything about you is physical and when you die you rot in the ground.

I don't think that anybody knows what happens to your spirit when you die...

Your body decays as your spirit lives on as it has affected those who are close to you.
You either go to heaven, hell, become a ghost, or turn into another animal and live another life.
That's what I believe.
