How long is "life" imprisonment?

if someone gets "life" for sexual assult and rape how long they looking to be in jail for as a minimum?

I think life is 14 yrs but it depends on how many life sentences they get usually it mounts up to how many things there getting charged with i think.

In the UK a life sentence is exactly that - life. A prisoner may be released on licence but can be recalled to prison for any transgressions. Therefore, shoplifting, which may carry a minimal penalty for your common or garden criminal, will most likely result in the licensee being returned to prison, with no guarantee of getting out.

In most US states, sexual assault is not a capital offense, but life can mean exactly that - life behind bars with no possibility of parole. If the sentence is with parole, a minimum term will usually be stated in the sentence, which the inmate must serve before being eligible for parole.

In the UK there is no longer a set term for life sentences, rather the judge will set a 'minimum tariff'. This can be as little as 8 years, gnerally about 12, but occasionally a judge will set no tariff and the prisoner will probably stay in prison for the rest of his life, altough he is able to apply for release after a certain number of years. Also, under the early release scheme prisoners can apply for release after serving one third of their sentence.

Life imprisonment should mean life, but in the UK you can normally expect to serve at least 10 years as long as you have been good inside. The judge normally says I recommend that this person does at least ..... years before considered for parole!!

even though the name life imprisonment sounds like you would be in prison for the rest of your life this can sometimes be true. It really depends on the criminality of the crime and how it was committed say if a murder too place it depends on how many people dies and the way he killed them say if it was mass murder with chainsaws the person would get a whole life in prison.

Life in prison means the persons entire natural life. Only exception is whether or not they have the possibility of parole. Then that is up to the judge how long the person has to be in jail before they are elligible or not to get out.

In the US, "life" means you are going to die in prison if your sentence states "life without the possibility of parole". Sometimes the offender can get "life with possibility of parole" . This means that with a good behavior record he can get out of prison in 25, 30, 40 years (depending on the time-frame set by the court).
In reality though, "lifers" who do "life" for rape have NO chance to get out of U.S. prison whatsoever. They get the crap beaten out of them on the everyday basis by other *respectable* inmates. Rape is a dishonorable crime and is disrespected by the other inmates. Rapers, especially child molesters, are preyed upon constantly and often get permanently disabled, killed, or take their own life while doing their time in prison.

25 years in the UK is considered life - of course you can only actually expect half that as the person will probably get parole, you can also take off any time on remand (ie kept in prison before the case) so can be hardly anything
