You can add a pattern, border or solid colour in a lighter shade so it appears underneath the original design. BTW, that was a cute idea for you & your mom!

All depends on what makes you, you! Typically people get sleeves filled with things that reflect their personality, or their past, or interests, things of that sort. So what I suggest you do is get somewhere really quiet, get a pencil and a piece of paper, and just start writing down what is "you". Try doodling some things too. It isn't like you have to get your doodles tattooed on you or anything, but if you get creative you can get some good ideas going, and have an artist help you with the real art work of your tattoo. Seriously this works for a lot of people and it's a great idea. Don't rush into anything, and don't just fill your body with stuff that doesn't mean anything to you. Put a lot of thought into it. It will come to you and when you figure out what you want, you will be happy with it I'm sure. Good luck to you, I hope you get a great tat!

any "design" around that tattoo would make it look odd, i would go back and just get some colored shading around it to make it pop a little more. if you'll follow this link go down to a slideshow on the right that has pictures of tattoos you'll come to a series of smaller tattoos a cat, a bunny, a snake and a venus flytrap all of which have colored shading around them to make them pop a little, i think you'll see what i'm talking about

You could always try the overused sun or moon around it and I think that would fit. You could also try maybe a small turtle and having the symbol on it's shell. You could also do a key hole sort of deal with the symbol on the inside of it to symbolize the importance of you and your mothers bond that you want to keep it under lock and key.
