Well its symbolic and it is for the unity of Muslims so that they don't get confused in praying and should be praying to one point. secondly Mecca is in the mid point of the world so easy for anyone to face that and pray. Well the prayers are answered even if one go somewhere and could'nt find out the right direction and had prayed in some wrong direction . In the beginning there was some confusion about which direction one should pray , so to make it easy Allah has ordered to pray towards Macca.its just for the ease of muslims. Yes its ordered in Quran.
Quran 2:144
"Indeed We see the turning of your face to heaven, so We shall surely turn you to a qiblah which you shall like; turn then your face towards the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you are, turn your face towards it, and those who have been given the Book most surely know that it is the truth from their Lord; and Allah is not at all heedless of what they do

the request to face mecca doesnt mean allah is only there, thats not a logical deduction :
there are 2 different types of praying in islam; SALA which is the RITUAL, and DO'A which is just praying or beseeching god.
now for the first type, being a ritual, there is a uniform way to perform it(thats what rituals are for) including, among other things, facing mecca, cleansing before praying, praying in clean place etc
for the second, in islam you can call upon god in any place ,any time and in any way(verbal or just thought)
it doesnt say in islam, for example, do not sin when you face mecca because god will see you, otherwise do as you may because god , according to them, is all-seeing, all-hearing, all-powerful .
for the other posters writing derogatory falsehoods about islam i say this:
1-please get over the fact that islam taught people to wash 5 times a day while most christians bathed only once a year (history)
2-admit that islam is actually the biggest religion in the world seeing that most christians today are either non practising or outright atheists.
3-admit that islam is the first religion, or one of the first genuinely caring about every INDIVIDUAL'S spirituality through enforcing certain rituals, doctrines, freedoms and restrictions , rather than submitting the ignorant masses to the powers of mostly decadent , sexually deviant , controlling and manipulative clergy .

Its the thank you to unite the Muslim Ummah. Muslims believe that the Kaaba is the holiest place in the international. that's commonly theory to have been geared up by making use of Prophet Abraham. that's used in basic terms as a focal factor for prayer (no longer worshiped) and easily shows a direction, imposed by making use of God to maintain cohesion and uniformity between worshipers. think of roughly it, around the international, thousands and thousands of muslims are dealing with that thank you to wish. we're not praying because of the fact Allah is greater contemporary in Mecca. Its in basic terms the region which replaced into chosen. x wish this helped x

I expect that it's for the same reason that Christians have to pray at all, after all, God should know your mind!
Assuming the existance of a deity, I'd assume that it is in fact for the benefit of the questioner, so as to cement their faith with ritual.
Even if it isn't in the Quran, it's worth noting that religion is to a huge extent carried by culture. Example: where in the New Testament does it say that you should go to church? It doesn't, but it /does/ say that you should love Your God.

God is Omnipresent, right.
God sends His Prophet here to teach us about His omnipresence, omnipotence, omniscience..., so we have to turn constantly to the Prophet to show our complete submission to Him, that is to God too.
If we say, I would turn anywhere I want, because God is omnipresent, we only show our arrogance before the Prophet of God and we may get lost due to lack of divne guidance on many other things.
If you have no reverence to the Prophet, any quote from His sacred verses is still of no use. Almost all Holy Books are now available on the Gutenberg Project at www.gutenberg.org/files/14209/14209.txt

There are so many more questions about Christianity.
For instance, why do Christians focus on the torture and murder of one unfortunate Jew 2,000 years ago. Isn't this sadistic?
Also, why do many Christians think it is holy to ingest in effigy the body and blood of this guy? Isn't this just slightly cannibalistic?
