Assuming you're doing a protection; is it for yourself or someone else? Like the previous users mentioned, black must be used to eliminate negativity from developing into your work area and a consecration of whatever tools you are working with.
Pine "cleanses" and will clear your focus with the intention you wish to develop. You can "dress" a green candle with a mixture of galangal, bay, vetivert, juniper and lime- that would be very powerful and to your advantage. That same formula can be used in the bath, just be careful not to slip on your way in or out.

Pine is for purification, green is for prosperity. Try burning a white or black candle.

White candles are better for protection, but pine is associated with protection and purification, as is rosemary.

It also depends one what form of protection you wish to infuse. For self - fennel is good, for possesions - caraway, hyssop. for travel - mugwort, ash, turmeric.

That would work if you were to believe it; however, I generally find black candles to be best. Black is the color of absorption (as it absorbs all light), and hence, it can be used to absorb the presence of evil; spirits usually will be aware of this, and tend to stay away.

It won't protect from anything except darkness. There is no particular meaning involved.

I don't think that'd work for anything but freshening up your home.

It's all in intent. If you believe it so, it is so.
