YES! It's a bird. A rare bird, that was nearly extinct. I had a wonderful book full of pictures and paintings. Some paintings are very funny and don't look at all like the true animal because they were paint by hearsay. Don't get confuse if anyone speaks to you about other kiwis. Actually, besides the fruits, the New Zealanders go also by the nickname "Kiwis", a bit like the Australians are "Aussies". I have no idea if they like it, though...

Don't think you'd have seen one just roaming around at an Australian nature park. As has been observed, they're nocturnal, flightless birds, native to New Zealand (which is not part of Australia...)
Hope they're not extinct yet, as Otorohanga's famous Kiwi House could be in trouble...

Yes, klaartedubois, we do like it - we call ourselves Kiwis! The national Rugby League team is called the Kiwis (as opposed to the national Rugby Union team, the All Blacks).

The Kiwi bird sure is alive and well. It is a bird, yes, and an animal too (birds ARE animals, just like we are). It is a nocturnal animal which comes out to feed at night, so a lot of zoo's have them in a "nocturnal" house where it is dark during the day so people can see them. In its native New Zealand its habitat is dwindling because of development, but it is protected.
The moa bird which once roamed New Zealand is extinct now because it was very slow and got hunted out.

Yup. They're a bird. Most of them live in New Zealand. They're about the size of a chicken and kind of a goofy looking bird.
