My Mom has a Golden who is the sweetest, most gentle dog I have ever seen. She is very dominant and only one other time has gotten aggressive with another female dog that was an adult. But even if the other dog is female, she is gentle as long as she's been around them since pups. I have an 11 week old Lab and I interact them every other day usually to keep both dogs accepting of the other. They usually get along GREAT but on Thanksgiving Mom brought her over and at first everything was fine. But suddenly when my puppy tried to play with her with one of her (my puppy) toys, the Golden began snarling and growling and pulling away. Then on 2 occassions, she actually grabbed her the skin on the front of her neck and held her. Luckily they left shortly after, saying I was mean because I intervened - not being mean, no hitting or yelling. Just separating. What could have caused this sudden change? Could it be from possibly coming into season? Just curious because she's so sweet otherwise!

I also should add that the Golden developed a lump in her neck 2 weeks ago, It's about the size of a quarter and soft and moves. I told Mom to have her checked but never has, which makes me mad! Could this change be an additional symptom of that? Oh and she's 9 years old in case that helps.

I understand about the protecting what is her but this dog hasn't had toys in years. She doesn't play with them normally. She has been here with my puppy on a few other occasions and was fine, it was just this day. Acting very strange, never seen her like that before. I don't pamper her that much when she's here anyway because she's off playing with my puppy normally but even so, I always love on my dog. Call me biased. lol I just cannot begin to imagine what would cause this. Mom thinks it's no big deal and I was being mean by separating them but geez, she scared me with my poor tiny 10 lb. puppy against her 110 lb. golden!!! (No I didn't hit, I don't do that. I merely sternly said the golden's name then separated them.)

it doesn't really sound mean to me, it sounds like an adult dog was trying to teach a puppy some manners, that's what they will do, even the mothers do that, either strike the pup or grab it and hold it to show it it was misbehaving

Could be a territorial thing too. It's hard to know for sure, unless there is an actual physical change in the dog, like problems with the brain, or unidentified pain (in the teeth, arthritis, etc.) you can't really know why the dog suddenly got nasty.

You should call the vet and ask him/her what could be causing this. Perhaps the Golden is ill or in pain which is causing new aggressions. Or if all else fails you should call the Dog Whisperer. He's awesome!!!!

Golden was adapted to your mom's house thinking everything was hers toy and all. When she goes over, then she thinks everything is hers. When you mess with the toy, she me want it back.
Another reason, she may be protecting "her" toys. You may help by pampering her less(petting, letting her on couches and etc.)
