I have been working on kicking but do not know how to kick without hurting my feet. How is my feet supposed to land on the person/target? I have seen clips of people breaking their shin bone from kicking improperly. Advice would be much appreciated.

For most kicks you want to make contact on the bottom of your foot . Make sure that when doing a front kick , your toes are pointed up .This helps to expose the maximum amount of your striking area . Doing a front kick should work like this :
1) place your weight on the non kicking leg.
2) raise your kicking leg with knee bent and toes pointed up.
3) kick forward by straightening the leg , use the ball of the foot to make contact . ( do not use your toes to kick , they ' ll end up broken .)
4) bring your leg back to the raised with knee bent position before lowering .
Try practicing this to develope speed , balance and power .

it depends on the kick, If it's a front snap kick, push kick, or roundhouse kick you'll want to pull the toes back to keep from jamming your toes.
if it's a side kick, hook kick, backspin kick, back pivot kick, axe kick (or any kick that requires hitting with the heel) you'll want to lock the heel straight (not keeping it parallel with the leg).
mostly whenever you see somebody breaking their shin from such an impact is usually from an ill timed strike and the opponent used a knee check against them.

the pain should be teaching you to change your technique. you also dont say what part of your foot is hurting... top, toes, side? go for stamps to the knee caps/shins, then you have no pain.
also, practice with shoes on, (even if you are a tournament fighter) as then you will have experience with the differences shoes can bring. everyone should train with your natural clothing to experience limitations and strengths.

Front Thrust Kick:
From basic front stance lower your horse to gain balance and strengthen your Qi, then chamber your kick by lifting your knee about belly button height, then thrust your kick out heal first hitting at your opponents hip girdle rendering him immobile by breaking his/her hip, and stopping their kick if needed.
Front Snap Kick:
From basic front stance lower your horse to gain balance and strengthen your Qi, then chamber your kick by lifting your knee about belly button height, then snap your kick out with foot pointed downward as if kicking a football for a goal, at your opponents nuts if applicable, thereby rendering him into a fetal position, or really pissing off your female opponent.
Roundhouse Kick:
From basic front stance lower your horse to gain balance and strengthen your Qi, then slightly turn the heal of the intended kick foot inward toward your body, next chamber your kick by lifting your knee about belly button height, then with a rotating motion throw your body, hip, and kick leg toward your opponent in a roundish fashion about rib height, or at the hip girdle. If executed properly this kick can break ribs or knee with relative ease.
